NextGen, Global Supply Chain, Unmanned Aircraft Systems Featured Discussion TopicsMay 27, 2014 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) will hold its Aviation and Aeronautics Forum and Exposition(AVIATION 2014), June 16-20 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, Georgia. The theme of the event will be “Aviation’s Global Promise – Challenges and Opportunities.”“The contributions of aviation and aeronautics to global commerce, security, scientific research, and travel over the past century cannot be overstated. But the aviation community will face many common challenges—technical, economic, geopolitical—as well as tremendous opportunities over the coming decades,” said AIAA President Jim Albaugh. “All of these issues—and many potential solutions—will be discussed at AVIATION 2014, as attendees, speakers, and exhibitors connect, collaborate, and exchange ideas on Aviation’s global promise.Featuring 18 discussion tracks and 1,500 individual presentations across 125 topic areas, AVIATION 2014 is an international forum that will bring together leading minds from industry, academia and government to provide actionable insights into the critical challenges and opportunities facing aviation and aeronautics. Specific topics areas will include: global interoperability; supply change management; systems affordability, efficiency, and sustainability; R&D and operational integration; and the risks, rewards and roadblocks facing the future of unmanned systems.

“AIAA forums are the catalyst for inspired idea exchange and innovative problem solving,” said AIAA Executive Director Sandra Magnus. “Building on the success of last year’s forum, AVIATION 2014 is designed to stimulate meaningful dialogue about issues across the aviation spectrum. From plenaries and panel discussions to technical sessions and paper presentations, what happens at AVIATION 2014 will have a direct impact on the future of the industry and the aerospace professionals who work in it.”

Orlando Carvalhoexecutive vice president, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, will deliver the forum’s opening keynote, “The Global Economic Impact of the F-35 Lightning II Program,” on June 16. Other notable speakers for the forum include: Edward Bolton,assistant administrator for NextGen, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA); Peter Cerda, regional vice president, The Americas, International Air Transport Association; R. Steven Justice,director, Georgia Center of Innovation for Aerospace, Georgia Department of Economic Development; Larry Lawson, president and chief executive officer (CEO), Spirit AeroSystems; Allen McArtor, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO), Airbus Group, Inc.; Tony Ng, Lockheed Martin Fellow, Lockheed Martin Corporation; Jaiwon Shin, associate administrator, Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate, NASA; Elizabeth Soltys, program manager, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), FAA; and Michael G. Whitaker, deputy administrator, FAA.

AVIATION 2014’s panel discussions will include: “Aviation’s Challenges and Opportunities—Perspectives from Brazil and China”; “Creating a Successful Commercial UAS Business Environment—Challenges and Opportunities”; “Global Supply Chain Challenges and Opportunities”; “Fly Smarter, Fly Cleaner, Fly Safer: International Integration and Interoperability”; “NASA Aeronautics Vision for the 21st Century—Why a New Strategy?”; “NextGen Implementation Challenges and Opportunities in an International Context”; and “The FAA Has Selected the UAS Test Sites—What Happens Next?”

On Tuesday, June 17, Axel Krein, senior vice president of research and technology at Airbus, will deliver the William Littlewood Memorial Lecture. The annual lecture recognizes those who have made personal contributions to the field of advancing air transport engineering. On Wednesday, June 18, Brian J. Tester, principal research fellow, Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, University of Southampton, United Kingdom, will deliver an Aerocoustics lecture entitled, “Turbofan Noise Research—Reconciling Theory and Measurement.” Lectures also will be presented throughout the week in the fields of Aerodynamics, Aerodynamic Measurement Technologies, Fluid Dynamics and Thermophysics.

AIAA will present 15 awards recognizing technical excellence in multiple fields during award luncheons on June 17 and 19. The awards to be presented are the: Aeroacoustics Award; Aerodynamic Measurement Technology Award; Aerodynamics Award;Fluid Dynamics Award; Ground Testing Award; James van Allen Space Environments; Losey Atmospheric Sciences Award; Plasmadynamics and Lasers Award; and the Thermophysics Award. Certificates of Merit will also be presented to the authors of best papers and to student competition winners.
