AIAA Statement on the Axiom Mission 1 (AX-1) Launch

April 8, 2022 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Executive Director Dan Dumbacher made the following statement:

“On behalf of the 30,000 professional and student members of AIAA, we congratulate the entire Axiom Mission 1 (AX-1) team on their successful launch today. Axiom, NASA, and SpaceX have introduced a new model for commercial space exploration, expanding access to low Earth orbit that in turn increases the scientific research opportunities on the International Space Station (ISS). We applaud this first private mission to the ISS, showing how NASA and private industry are working together to extend the human neighborhood into low Earth orbit in meaningful ways.

In addition to expanding commercial research opportunities in the ISS orbiting laboratory, the AX-1 mission adds more names to the growing list of astronauts due to commercial space activity. From entrepreneurs to philanthropists, we are seeing a new breed of explorer emerge in low Earth orbit. We are encouraged to see the space economy growing, as these innovators work to improve life on Earth and accelerate our off-world future. We look forward to following their progress.

We recognize the countless aerospace industry professionals involved in making today’s launch a success. We salute Axiom, NASA, and SpaceX, and their entire team, for helping shape the future of aerospace.”

AIAA Statement on Successful Launch of James Webb Space Telescope

December 25, 2021 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Executive Director Dan Dumbacher made the following statement:

“On behalf of the 30,000 professional and student members of AIAA, we congratulate NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), and the entire James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) team on today’s successful launch. This amazing observatory will allow us to look into the history of our cosmos. We look forward to the new discoveries from JWST that will help us understand the origins of the universe.

Countless AIAA professional members have dedicated years of their careers to the research, engineering, testing, and development of this incredible astronomy mission. In addition, numerous academic and industry partners on the JWST team are AIAA corporate members who contributed mightily to this mission. Applying their technical expertise with determination and perseverance since 1996 has led us to this exciting day. Over the years, they have chronicled their work on JWST by authoring articles for AIAA journals and meeting papers for AIAA forums. These original research results and technological progress on JWST have been published in AIAA’s Aerospace Research Central, at arc.aiaa.org, to fulfill our commitment to ensuring students and professionals can stay current on the most important advances in aerospace science and technology. Through the combined efforts of AIAA members on the JWST mission, they are shaping the future of aerospace.”

AIAA Statement on Blue Origin’s Successful NS-29 Mission

February 4, 2025 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) issued the following statement from AIAA CEO Clay Mowry:

“On behalf of the 30,000 professional and student members of AIAA, we congratulate Blue Origin on its successful NS-29 mission. The rocket included 30 payloads that experienced two minutes of lunar gravity forces. We look forward to learning the results of these experiments to help us prepare for more activities on the lunar surface in the future.”

AIAA Statement on Blue Origin’s Successful NS-31 Mission

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 14, 2025 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) issued the following statement from AIAA CEO Clay Mowry:

“Congratulations to Blue Origin on its 11th human flight as the all-female crew roared beyond the Kármán line, a successful NS-31 mission. It’s an exciting time in history, witnessing the number of commercial astronauts growing to more than 50 people through the New Shepard program. We’re so inspired as we hear how each crew member has been changed when they return to Earth.”

We applaud this private mission to the orbiting laboratory. It’s got all the hallmarks of modern space exploration – a public-private partnership making it possible, an international crew, and a 14-day space mission filled with microgravity research, technology demonstrations, and public outreach. These explorers are working to improve life on Earth and accelerate our off-world future. We look forward to following their progress.
