December 17, 2018 – Reston, Va. –The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Foundation is pleased to announce the winners of its 2017-2018 Undergraduate Team Aircraft Design Competition – Hybrid-Electric General Aviation Aircraft (HEGAA).

The competition asked AIAA student teams to design a new Hybrid-Electric General Aviation Aircraft (HEGAA) as a replacement for the A-10.

The winners are:

    • First Prize: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Champaign, Illinois, for their design “The HT-Series.”Ethan Clemmitt, Alec Cepeda, Logan Brodhead, Zongxu Dong, Arvinto Pratomo, Joseph Lullo. Dr. Huy Tran, faculty advisor. Team name: Team Hotel.
    • Second Prize (tie): Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia, and Loughborough University, Loughborough, United Kingdom, for their design Project HEGAAsus: Next Generation Hybrid Electric General Aviation Aircraft.” Samantha Rocker, Daniel Guerrero, Kyle Silva, Ashley Peyton-Bruhl, Daniel Fritsch, Nathaniel Marsh, Troy Bergin, Jennifer Glover, Alexander McLean, Dhirun Mistry. Dr. Pradeep Raj, Virginia Tech, faculty advisor; Dr. James Knowles, Loughborough University, faculty advisor. Team name: HamsterWorks.
    • Second Prize: Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, for their design “Dolphin.”Alexandre Acerra Gil, Eduardo Pavoni Gamba, Gabriel Araújo Hernández, Guilherme Miquelim Caires, Higor Luis Silva, João Paulo Vieira, Kimberlly Costa Carvalho, Luiz Gustavo Santiago, Pedro Brito, Roberto Martins de Castro Neto. Dr. Thiago A.M. Guimarães, faculty advisor.
  • Third Prize: Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia, for their design “Hawken General Aviation’s Hybrid Electric Air Transport (HEAT) Family.” Sean Berger, Bradley Polidoro, Carli Rau, Amelia Wentzel, Nicholas Ferentinos, Zachary Stossel, Joshua Fang, Kapil Gadre. Dr. Pradeep Raj, faculty advisor. Team name: HAWKEN.
