Embedding Machine Learning into Finite Element Analysis to Accelerate Design and Enhance Collaboration

Since nearly the conception of the finite element method, superelements, or substructures for linear static (static condensation) or linear dynamic (Craig-Bampton) analyses, have been a relevant technology for achieving computational tractability for models that exceed computation capability. This is done by reducing segments of an overall assembly model into reduced representations (e.g., stiffness matrices, mass matrices, etc.).

With modern computation capabilities, the role of superelements has shifted toward a method for finalizing part representations prior to inclusion in larger assembly models. These reduced models significantly limit the design flexibility in downstream analyses, which may be required to meet systems-level requirements. By leveraging machine learning techniques with ODYSSEE, Smart Superelements (SSE), introduced in MSC Nastran, can be generated, and include predetermined parameter vaariations.

This capability provides the part owner with the ability to embed select variations into the superelement prior to its inclusion in larger assembly models. Similarly, the assembly analyst can adjust these select parameters at solution time without the expertise of the part owner. As a result, the institutional knowledge of the part owner and prior what-if studies can be captured to allow for flexibility in meeting systems-level requirements. In this work, an example end-to-end workflow will be demonstrated for a drone model.

2023 ASCEND Call for Content Webinar #2

This short webinar will provide a high-level overview on two of the six 2023 ASCEND topics—space traffic management/coordination and space security and protection. Speakers will help spark ideas on how you can participate in the 2023 ASCEND Call for Content and provide tips to help you submit a session proposal or technical paper. A live Q&A will be held at the end of the webinar.

25th AIAA International Space Planes and Hypersonic Systems and Technologies Conference

The 25th AIAA International Space Planes and Hypersonic Systems and Technologies Conference is jointly organized with the Society for Shock Wave Research (India) and the Center of Excellence in Hypersonics, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. The conference provides a forum for discussion and the exchange of information for attendees from across the globe on leading-edge research and development activities associated with space planes and hypersonic atmospheric flight vehicles, and the technologies underpinning these capabilities.

Presentations will be provided on national programs from North America, South America, Australia, Europe, and Asia, and multiple opportunities for international collaboration will be discussed.

NASA/JPL & WHOI Live from Research Vessel Atlantis — Meet the Professionals [High School Member Webinar]

AIAA Members: make sure you are signed in to the site  with your member credentials to be able to access the on-demand replay.

Hosted by the AIAA STEM K-12 Outreach Committee. Meet and hear directly from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) engineers and scientists aboard R/V Atlantis. High school students were able to ask questions and learn about the interaction between disciplines, avenues for careers, and get a tour of the expedition. The webinar featured a direct connection with the team in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska that is currently diving both the crewed Alvin submersible and the robotic Orpheus-class submersibles to map and sample some of the deepest regions on Earth (5000m in the Aleutian trench). Interact with the team collaborating to build and deploy the Orpheus-class vehicles that contribute to Earth-science as well as serve as early pre-cursors for vehicles that might explore ocean worlds beyond the Earth.
