Flying Magazine reports, “The Japan Self-Defense Force (JSDF) has cleared its V-22 Osprey fleet to return to flight after determining pilot error was the cause of an October accident on Yonaguni Island. The incident occurred during a joint exercise with U.S. military where the V-22 Osprey tilted and hit the ground as it was taking off, though no injuries were reported among the 16 on board.”

Starship Set to Launch for 6th Time from SpaceX’s Starbase in Texas
USA Today reports that SpaceX’s Starship megarocket is set to takeoff on its sixth uncrewed flight test from Boca Chica, Texas. “The next test of the Starship, the sixth overall, is set to take place as soon as Monday evening – about a month since the last demonstration, SpaceX said.”

November 18, 2024 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is pleased to announce the 2025 AIAA Dryden Lectureship in Research is awarded to Tim C. Lieuwen, Regents’ Professor, David S. Lewis Jr. Chair, and Executive Director of the Strategic Energy Institute at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.
Lieuwen will deliver his lecture, “Future Research Directions in Aero Propulsion and Clean Energy Systems,” Tuesday, 7 January, 4 p.m. ET, during the 2025 AIAA SciTech Forum, Orlando, Florida.

Lieuwen is a Regents’ Professor and the interim Executive Vice President for Research at Georgia Tech, where he provides overall leadership for its research, economic development, compliance, and commercialization units. He is also founder and CTO of TurbineLogic, an energy industry analytics firm. He is an international authority on clean energy and propulsion, and his work has contributed to numerous commercialized innovations in the energy and aerospace sectors. He has authored four books and over 500 other publications. Lieuwen serves on boards of three DOE national labs and EPRI, and is a DOE Secretary appointee to the National Petroleum Counsel. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
Future aero propulsion and clean energy systems will be profoundly influenced by broader societal drivers associated with decarbonization, national security, and resilience. Lieuwen’s lecture will address these societal drivers and the underlying RD&D needs, such as system efficiencies, operational flexibility, emissions and environmental impacts, and fuel flexibility. As case studies, the lecture will highlight fundamental problems in combustion and fluid mechanics that flow out of these drivers. Many of these issues drive from the fact that combustion occurs in a high shear flow with strong density gradients, leading to important flow instabilities that often dominate fluid mixing, flame stability, interactions with acoustic waves, and system operability. Indeed, it is fair to say that understanding and controlling these interactions will be one of the key enablers – or stumbling blocks – behind realization of low carbon thermal energy systems, and next generation aircraft and rocket engines. Moreover, the dynamics and stability of reacting flows introduce fascinating physiochemical behaviors, which are fundamentally interesting in their own right. This lecture will span from fundamentals to current applications and unsolved problems at the intersection of combustion, fluid mechanics, and flow stability, and will be of interest to industry, researchers, and students.
The Dryden Lectureship in Research is one of the most prestigious lectureships bestowed by the Institute. Since the inaugural lecture in 1961, it has been a catalyst for sharing research advancements and knowledge. This premier lecture is named in honor of Dr. Hugh L. Dryden, a renowned aerospace leader and a director of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, or NACA, as well as the first deputy administrator of NASA when the agency was created in 1958. SpaceX Plans to Launch Starship Up to 25 Times in 2025
Gizmodo reports, “SpaceX has big plans for its Starship rocket. After a groundbreaking test flight, in which the landing tower caught the booster, the company’s founder and CEO Elon Musk wants to see the megarocket fly up to 25 times next year, working its way up to a launch rate of 100 flights per year, and eventually a Starship launching on a daily basis.

Beta Electric Aircraft Performs First Test Flight
Flying Magazine reports, “Vermont-based Beta Technologies has successfully completed the first flight of its electric aircraft built on its new production line, it announced Thursday. Kyle Clark, Beta founder and CEO, conducted the first flight of the aircraft, which lasted nearly an hour. During the flight, the aircraft took off and climbed to 7,000 feet and flew several approaches before a normal landing.”

NASA and Roscosmos Unable to Agree on Cause and Severity of ISS Air Leak
Space News reports, “NASA and Roscosmos continue to disagree on the cause and severity of an air leak in the Russian segment of the International Space Station, one that NASA worries could lead to a “catastrophic failure” of part of a Russian module. That disagreement was brought to light during a brief meeting of NASA’s ISS Advisory Committee Nov. 13, which recounted a meeting of that committee with its Roscosmos counterpart in Moscow in September to discuss issues with the station.”

U.S. Air Force to Order More Autonomous Fighter Prototypes
Aviation Week reports, “The U.S. Air Force plans to add more orders for the first batch of Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) prototypes to equip a newly established experimental operations unit, acquisition chief Andrew Hunter said on Nov. 13. The additional orders come after the Air Force selected Anduril and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI) for CCA Increment 1 prototypes in April.”

Boom Supersonic’s XB-1 Approaches Speed of Sound in Flight Test
Flying Magazine reports, “Boom Supersonic—the developer of a 64-to-80-passenger commercial airliner that flies faster than the speed of sound—last week set speed and altitude records with its XB-1 test aircraft. And it’s gearing up for another test flight as soon as Wednesday, founder and CEO Blake Scholl said Monday.”

SpaceX Falcon 9 Set to Launch from California Wednesday Night
Spaceflight Now reports, “SpaceX is set to launch a Falcon 9 rocket with another 20 Starlink satellites from California Wednesday night. The Starlink 9-11 mission will feature 13 satellites that include Direct to Cell capabilities. Liftoff from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) from Vandenberg Space Force Base is set for 8:21 p.m. PST (11:21 p.m. EST, 0421 UTC).”

Vertical Aerospace Begins Untethered Flight Tests
Aerotime reports, “British eVTOL developer Vertical Aerospace has conducted the first untethered flight of its VX4 prototype, kicking off Phase Two of its development program. Until now Vertical Aerospace had conducted piloted flight tests, but with the aircraft always tethered to the ground by a cable.”
