Aviation Week reported that the North American MRO market “is projected to account for 21.8% of the worldwide total from 2024-33.” This will “derive from more than 67,000 service events, according to the 2024 edition of Aviation Week Network’s Commercial Aviation Fleet & MRO Forecast.” The active North American aircraft fleet “increases from just more than 9,480 active aircraft in 2024 to more than 11,200 in 2033, an 18% increase during the period.” This growth “of the fleet and the commensurate utilization expected will drive MRO spending to increase by more than 9.3% over 10 years.” The forecast “projects that Boeing aircraft will account for the majority of MRO expenditures by type certificate holder, capturing more than 57% of the total market, followed by Airbus (29%) and Embraer (7%).”

Air New Zealand Considers Passenger Flights with Beta’s Alia Electric Aircraft
Aviation Week reports that while Air New Zealand “plans to use its first electric aircraft for a cargo-only commercial demonstration, it will consider broadening its role and adding more aircraft as the program progresses.” The carrier “announced an order for a Beta Technologies Alia electric aircraft on Dec. 6.”

University of New South Wales Canberra Hosts 2023 AIAA Region VII Student Conference

December 7, 2023 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is pleased to announce the winners of the 2023 Region VII Student Conference, held 27–28 November at the University of New South Wales Canberra and online.
Attendees presented 39 papers and represented 19 universities from 11 countries, including Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Students presented papers in three categories: undergraduate, masters, and high school. Their presentations were evaluated by experienced aerospace professionals. Additionally, the papers will be published by AIAA and available on Aerospace Research Center (ARC) in January 2024.
For the undergraduate and masters categories, first-place winners received a cash prize of $500 and an invitation to participate in the International Student Conference held during the 2024 AIAA SciTech Forum, 8–12 January 2024. Second-place winners received a cash prize of $300 and third-place winners received $250. The high school student winners received $100 for first place, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place.
AIAA student conferences are an opportunity for students to present and publish their work in front or their peers and members of the industry. Each of the AIAA seven regions host one conference each year. The Regional Student Conferences for Regions I-VI will take place in Spring 2024.

All V-22 Ospreys Grounded After Investigation into Crash Finds Possible Materiel Failure
ExecutiveGov reports that the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) “is working with the U.S. Marine Corps to improve the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft’s survivability and establish its assault-support elements in high-threat situations, National Defense Magazine reported Wednesday.” Col. Matthew Kelly, head of the Department of Defense’s joint V-22 program, “noted that his office is also looking into implementing helmet-mounted visualization technologies for the MV-22 variant for missions in degraded environments.” According to Kelly, “the V-22 production line will accommodate additional orders through fiscal 2023. The governments of Indonesia and Israel are also looking to procure V-22s, he added.”

SpaceX’s Next Starship Flight Expected to Include Propellant Transfer Demonstration for NASA

CNBC reports, “SpaceX could attempt a key demonstration for NASA during the third test flight of its towering Starship rocket.” According to a NASA official, “the next Starship flight is expected to include ‘a propellant transfer demonstration,’ though an agency spokesperson noted Tuesday the plan is subject to change, as is often the case in the space industry.” NASA spokesperson Jimi Russell said in a statement, “NASA and SpaceX are reviewing options for the demonstration to take place during an integrated flight test of Starship and the Super Heavy rocket. However, no final decisions on timing have been made.”

Boeing Tallies Delivery of 46 737s in November
Reuters reports that The Boeing Company “delivered 46 narrowbody 737s in November, sources told Reuters on Tuesday.” Last month’s total “brings Boeing’s single-aisle deliveries up to 351 units for the year so far, leaving the US planemaker about 25 planes away from making its revised target for at least 375-400 737 deliveries this year.” Last month’s 737 deliveries “included 45 MAX planes and 1 737 NG-based P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, sources said.”

Richard Branson Says He Will Not Invest More Money into Virgin Galactic
CNN reports that shares of Virgin Galactic, “the space tourism venture founded by Richard Branson, are plunging after the British billionaire said he has no plans to invest more money in the company as he says it has ‘sufficient funds’ already.” This news contributed to Virgin Galactic’s stock falling 16% at market open on Monday. Virgin Galactic “has had a landmark year, flying its first customers to the edge of space after years of waiting.” But the company “has also been in a state of flux, having just laid off about 20% of its staff and working to introduce a new line of suborbital spacecraft that will supplant the vehicle it’s spent more than a decade developing.”

Macleod Chair of Engineering, and Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Givi will deliver his lecture, “The Promise of Quantum Computing for Aerospace Science and Engineering,” Monday, 8 January, 1730 hrs ET, during the 2024 AIAA SciTech Forum, Orlando, Florida.

The Dryden Lectureship in Research is one of the most prestigious lectureships bestowed by the Institute. Since the inaugural lecture in 1961, it has been a catalyst for sharing research advancements and knowledge. This premier lecture is named in honor of Dr. Hugh L. Dryden, a renowned aerospace leader and a director of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, or NACA, as well as the first deputy administrator of NASA when the agency was created in 1958. The award emphasizes the importance of basic research in advancing aeronautics and astronautics.
Peyman Givi is the Distinguished Professor and James T. Macleod Chair of Engineering, and Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. He received his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1984, and B.E. from Youngstown State University in Ohio in 1980. Previously, he was the University at Buffalo Distinguished Professor of Aerospace Engineering from 1988 to 2002. Givi also has worked as a Research Scientist at Flow Industries, Inc., in Seattle, Washington. He has had frequent visiting appointments at the NASA Langley and Glenn Research Centers.
Givi is among the first 15 engineering faculty nationwide who received the White House Faculty Fellowship from President George H.W. Bush. He also received NASA Public Service Medal, the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, and the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award. In addition to being an AIAA Fellow, Givi is Fellow of AAAS, AAM, APS, ASME, the Combustion Institute, and was named ASME Engineer of the Year in Pittsburgh in 2007. He is currently on the Editorial Boards of the AIAA Journal, Combustion Theory and Modelling, Computers & Fluids, and Journal of Applied Fluid Mechanics.
Givi’s lecture will address the “second quantum revolution” — we are now at a stage that we can use “quantum science” to invent “quantum technologies.” An example of this technology is Quantum Computing (QC), which has been experiencing significant growth over the last decade, both in hardware and software. Used in appropriate ways, quantum mechanics can provide powerful resources for solving certain classes of problems, achieving cost scalings with the size of the problem that are not available to existing “classical” computers — this is known as the “quantum advantage.”
QC is starting to make an impact in practical aerospace engineering and science applications. The major contributions have been based on “quantum-ready” and “quantum inspired” algorithms. The former deals with algorithms that are shown to provide quantum advantage, and can be used when error-corrected digital, (unitary) gate, universal quantum computers are routinely available and utilized. The latter refers to computational methodologies that are classical but are inspired by quantum physics. Both methodologies are shown to capture some of the intricate structures of classical problems of interest to the aerospace community. This demonstration of quantum advantage will certainly play a significant role in enhancing the ecosystem of QC similar to that currently established in the silicon-based classical computer technology.

FAA Calls for Extending Length of Cockpit Voice-Recording Requirements
Reuters reports the Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday “said it is proposing to extend the cockpit voice-recording requirement to 25 hours for all new airplanes from the current two-hour loop.” Reuters explains the voice recorder “captures transmissions and sounds in the cockpit…and can be crucial in understanding why airplane crashes occur.” The National Transportation Safety Board “has been pushing for the change since 2018, and the United States is behind much of the world in the requirement for commercial planes.” Europe, for instance, “has required new airplanes to collect 25 hours of cockpit voice recordings since 2021.” Reuters adds that the issue “has taken on new urgency after a series of near miss incidents raised alarm about U.S. air safety. The NTSB has opened seven investigations into near-miss incidents since January, including some that could have been catastrophic.”
