Velis Electro Becomes Popular Among Trainee Pilots

CNN reports that the Velis Electro, “the world’s only electric plane fully certified in the EU and the UK, is taking off as a greener option for trainee pilots.” The Velis Electro “can fly up to 12,000 feet and has a maximum speed of 98 knots (113 mph). It has a flight time of around 50 minutes (plus reserve) per charge, with two batteries that take up to two hours to completely recharge.”

United Airlines Creates New Pilot Training Program

CBS News reported that United Airlines “has launched a program to train the next generation of pilots, including promoting other workers to fill those vacancies.” United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said, “We’ve got over 100 regional aircraft that effectively aren’t flying because there are not enough pilots to fly them.” CBS News Travel Editor Peter Greenberg said, “One of the biggest sources for airlines was the military. The problem today is there are not that many pilots in the military. There are a lot of drone pilots – that doesn’t really help in terms of being able to bring people in.” United Airlines “offers some scholarships and priority to relatives of staff.”

Flexjet to Hire 350 Pilots

ExecutiveGov reports that NASA “has selected five universities to design research experiments that will take place on the International Space Station.” Each awardee “will receive approximately $100,000 to formulate these experiments under the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research or EPSCoR program.” The awardees are: Montana State University, New Mexico State University, the University of Delaware, the University of Idaho, and the University of Nebraska.
