2027 Region V Student Conference

Take part in AIAA’s Regional Student Conference by presenting your research in a formal technical meeting, exchange ideas, and discuss programs with students from other universities in your region.

Please note: A high school or university student in good standing at their institution who is also an AIAA student member is eligible to submit a paper to the Regional Student Conference. The submitting and presenting author(s) must be AIAA student members. Any student may attend the Regional Student Conference but may be subjected to a higher registration fee if they are not AIAA members. You must be attending a high school/college/university in Region V to participate in the Region V Student Conference. Students can petition to present at a conference outside their university’s region by emailing [email protected].

Region V includes Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. Additionally, it includes the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.

Cash prizes are awarded for first, second, and third place winners for each category.

2026 AIAA Young Professionals, Students, and Educators (YPSE) Conference

The Mid-Atlantic Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is organizing the AIAA Young Professionals, Students, and Educators (YPSE) Conference on November 20, 2026. The conference is at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory Kossiakoff Center.

We are seeking 15-minute presentations in areas of interest to the aerospace community from young professionals (under 35 years old), graduates, undergraduates, high school students, and educators. Topics can be technical or focus on Gender, Generation, and Geography (3G+). YPSE only requires an abstract and presentation submission to participate in the presentation sessions. Written papers are not accepted.

Technical track: Presentations are scored on various criteria, including the ability to convey the impact of the work, demonstrate knowledge of the field and methodologies, and communicate effectively. Monetary prizes are awarded to exceptional presentations in the various categories listed above.

3G+ track: Presenters are encouraged to share their stories and speak on topics including but not limited to dealing with imposter syndrome/burnout, authenticity, empowerment and outreach, intersectionality, and more.

This is an excellent opportunity to share your work with the aerospace community and learn more about the innovative work of fellow aerospace enthusiasts! You do not need to be a member of the Mid-Atlantic Section to participate!

Registration for presenters and attendees is now OPEN at aiaaypse.com. Presenter abstract submissions are due by Tuesday, October 27th. Abstracts should be a 250-500-word overview of the topic you will be presenting. Abstracts may be released to conference attendees. Complete papers are not accepted. Abstract submissions should be submitted using the link received via email after completion of the registration process or by using this link. Abstract acceptance notifications will be sent by Friday, October 30st.

Mary Jackson Lecture: A Wandering Fluid Mechanics Scientific Career

In this seminar, Ivett Leyva, Ph.D., P.E. will describe her remarkable career journey, which has led her to study various fluid mechanics problems, as well as the challenges and rewards of holding management and leadership positions. She will discuss topics related to preventing rocket explosions, including the construction of hazardous facilities for testing rocket propulsion and enhancing the scientific understanding of hypersonic flight. Leyva will also share insights from two hypersonic flight experiments she initiated at the Air Force, along with the portfolio she managed. Finally, she will conclude with her experiences as department head and her current efforts to establish a new research enterprise aimed at addressing applied research challenges from industry while tailoring graduates to meet industry needs.

The Mary Jackson Named Lecture is given in honor of Mary Jackson (1921–2005), who became the first black female aerospace engineer at NASA in 1958. The lecture is jointly sponsored by the Royal Aeronautical Society and AIAA.
