Reuters reports that Airbus delivered its first A330neo jet to TAP Portugal Monday, seeking a “fiercely competitive battle” with The Boeing Company at the “lower end of the market for long-haul jets.” The competition pits the Boeing 787 and Airbus A330neo against each other in one of the “most crowded but potentially lucrative parts of the aircraft market, predicted to represent $1 trillion in sales over 20 years.” New Rolls-Royce engines offer the A330neo fuel savings, although the engines have been delayed by “industrial problems at the British supplier.” According to Boeing, the company has won 65 percent of all wide-body aircraft orders over the last five years. Airbus Commercial Aircraft COO Guillaume Faury “said he expected Airbus to catch up on delayed A330neo deliveries by end-2019.” Faury told reporters the A330neo “will in my view get more traction when it is in service.”
