AIAA to Recognize Technical Excellence in Aerospace at the 2018 AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum Written 6 July 2018

July 6, 2018 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is pleased to announce the winners of technical excellence awards to be presented during the 2018 AIAA Propulsion and Energy Forum and Exposition.

The awards will be presented during the Excellence in Aerospace Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, 11 July, at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, Ohio. For more information, please go to the AIAA Honors and Awardswebsite.

The following aerospace professionals will be recognized for their outstanding contributions in their field having been chosen by their peers from related AIAA technical committees and local sections:

• Peter Carian, aerospace fellow with The Aerospace Corporation, is being presented with the 2018 Aerospace Power Systems Award in recognition of technical excellence in space power systems architecture, electronic component design, and anomaly resolution.
• Gabriel Roy, president of CPnE Consultants, is being presented with the 2018 Air Breathing Propulsion Award for his contribution to air breathing systems by envisioning and managing more than 500 R&D projects leading to innovations, increased range and speed, and reduced emission and noise.
• Brian Edward Launder, professor at the University of Manchester, is being honored with the 2018 Energy Systems Award for leading modelling, measurement, and computational research in turbulent flows for 50 years with diverse energy-related applications including, especially, gas-turbine blade cooling.
• Drew Damon, propulsion engineering manager at SpaceX, is being honored with the 2018 Liquid Propulsion Young Professional Award for his early achievements in liquid propulsion and demonstrated potential for a successful career in the field.
• Darren Tinker, a student in the Mechanical Engineering department at Vanderbilt University, is being honored with the 2018 Liquid Propulsion Student Award for his outstanding work as a graduate student in liquid propulsion.
• Hai Wang, professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Stanford University, is being presented with the 2018 Propellants and Combustion Award for his pioneering contributions to the theory and practice of homogenous and heterogeneous combustion kinetics.
• T. Kent Pugmire, retired technical representative of the AVCO Space Systems/Standex Engineering and Technology Group, is being presented with the 2018 Wyld Propulsion Award for his pioneering contributions to the design and development in-space propulsion systems including the creation of electro-thermal ammonia/hydrazine propulsion systems used in hundreds of spacecraft.
• Rodger E. Farley, chief systems engineer with World View Enterprises, is being presented with the Engineer of the Year Award for the system design of a controlled lighter-than-air vehicle capable of station-keeping in the stratosphere.

In addition to the technical awards, AIAA will recognize Robert Stuever, senior engineering specialist at Textron Aviation, with a Sustained Service Award for his 35-plus years of service to the Institute at both the national and section levels.
