FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 8, 2021 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is encouraged by the FAA’s new rule streamlining and clarifying procedures to obtain agency approval for supersonic aircraft testing in the United States.
AIAA Executive Director Dan Dumbacher made the following statement after the rule was issued:
“This new rule provides important guidance for the various companies developing a new generation of civil supersonic aircraft. It is both welcome and encouraging news for the aviation sector, including several AIAA corporate members. The Institute hopes the testing permitted by this regulation will ultimately pave the way for regulation allowing supersonic flight over land in the United States. The Institute calls on such regulation to be deployed in the most economical and sustainable manner without making the application overly prohibitive, either in cost to the customer or in utilization by the operator. We also ask Congress to support robust, long-term Federal civil aeronautics research and technology initiatives to ensure our continued leadership in this area.”
