Timothy J. Frei is sector vice president of Strategy and Business Development and the acting sector vice president of Research and Advanced Design at Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems, a premier provider of military aircraft, autonomous systems, aerospace structures and next-generation solutions.
In the role of Strategy and Business Development, Frei is responsible for the development, expansion and growth of the Aeronautics Systems sector and market strategies, alignment of resources and investments to strategy, development of new and evolved mission solutions for domestic and international customers, and to provide business development, customer engagement and capture support for all divisions across the sector.
Frei also serves as acting vice president of Research and Advanced Design, an organization entirely focused on research, technology and advanced design concepts that will serve as a pipeline for future business shaping and growth opportunities. This organization has responsibility for the very early phase concept definition, development and research into cross-cutting technology including autonomy, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and joint all-domain command and control. This organization will also oversee strategic business units Sonoma Photonics and Scaled Composites.
At Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, Frei previously led the Global Strategy and Mission Solutions organization with responsibilities for the sector’s strategy and growth of its air, space, and multi-domain portfolios. Prior to this, he served as vice president of Communications Systems, providing architectures, systems, payloads, advanced products and technologies to satisfy the communication needs of air, space and terrestrial users across the Department of Defense, intelligence, NASA, civil, commercial and international communities.
Previously, Frei was vice president of the System Enhancements and Product Applications organization, overseeing all aspects of the sector’s market growth in space. Earlier in his career, Frei was vice president of Advanced Systems and responsible for the formulation and execution of the sector’s strategy for the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance market area. Frei’s program experience spans more than 20 different space programs in 11 mission areas, covering all phases of engineering, from concept definitions, through design, production, integration, test, launch and operations.
Frei earned a bachelor’s degree in aeronautics engineering and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from UCLA. Additionally, he completed the UCLA Executive Program at the Anderson School of Business and is a chartered financial analyst.
