The Space Workforce Forum

The Space Workforce Forum is a structured, facilitated listening event organized by the Office of Space Commerce (OSC), Policy, Advocacy & International Division (PAID), as part of the Commercial Space Policy & Industry Strategy programming. It is designed to establish a shared state of awareness across the space ecosystem by combining structured listening with curated workforce perspectives. This phase is intentionally accessible and inclusive, enabling broad situational understanding of workforce considerations shaping the space sector.

AIAA CEO Clay Mowry

The forum will be conducted in-person with a live stream option for broader ecosystem awareness. Remote participants may observe proceedings and submit questions through a moderated Q&A channel.

AIAA is pleased to be a sponsor of the program and AIAA CEO Clay Mowry will present remarks between 12:00 – 12:20 p.m. to provide an overview of AIAA and his insights on the aerospace workforce.

Explain the Crew Friendly Design

JimDuttonCircleHeadshotJim Dutton is a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and former NASA astronaut. Dutton was one of 14 members of the 19th NASA astronaut class and logged over 362 hours in space. He now supports the Artemis program and the HLS system as a technical advisor at Dynetics.



LeeArchambaultCircleHeadshotLee Archambault, a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and former NASA astronaut, was selected as a NASA pilot in 1998 and has logged over 27 days in space. In his current role at Sierra Nevada Corporation, Archambault serves as the director of project engineering.



JanetKavandiCircleHeadshotJanet Kavandi is a retired NASA Astronaut and former NASA Glenn Research Center Director. She has logged more than 33 days in space and currently serves as senior vice president of programs for the Space Systems Group for the Sierra Nevada Corporation.



CarlWalzCircleHeadshotCarl Walz is a U.S. Air Force Retired Colonel and former NASA astronaut. He is a veteran of four space flights and has logged a total of 231 days in space with 3 spacewalks in the EMU and Orlan space suits, totaling 19 hours. Following his career at NASA, Walz pursued industry experience and is currently the director of Business Development at Oceaneering.

Alan Stern Alan Stern is a planetary scientist, space program executive, aerospace consultant, author and public speaker. Since 2001, he has led NASA’s $880 million New Horizons mission, and in 2018, he was appointed by the Trump administration to a six-year term on the U.S. National Science Board. Stern has over 30 years of experience in space instrumentation development.



JackBurnsCircleHeadshotJack Burns is a professor in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder, and is vice president emeritus for Academic Affairs and Research for the CU system. Burns is currently the director of the Network for Exploration and Space Science, a $5 million center of excellence, funded by the NASA Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institute.



MarkPellerCircleHeadshotMark Peller is the vice president of major development at United Launch Alliance (ULA), and in this position is responsible for development of Vulcan rocket. For commercial launches, the Dynetics HLS system can be flown aboard United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan Centaur rocket.



DanHendricksonCircleHeadshotDan Hendrickson serves as the vice president of Business Development for Astrobotic, a lunar logistics company based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dynetics is the propulsion provider for Astrobotic’s Peregrine Lunar Lander, which will deliver customer payloads to the lunar surface.



GeorgianaKramerCircleHeadshotGeorgiana Kramer is a senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona. She is a planetary geologist with a background in geochemistry, petrology, and remote sensing. She studies and maps the composition and structure of terrestrial planetary bodies; her expertise is the moon.

The AIAA Region VII Student Conference is a technical and oral paper competition for undergraduate and graduate students of all majors! Students may submit any paper that covers the technical disciplines of AIAA, and will have the chance to compete for cash prizes in a fun-filled two-day event. First-place winners will be offered a chance to compete in the 2022 International Student Conference, taking place in conjunction with the 2022 AIAA SciTech Forum, with flight, lodging, and most expenses paid.

AIAA Sydney Section Student Conference Moves to Fully Online

AIAA has announced that the AIAA Sydney Section Student Conference, cosponsored by the AIAA Student Branch at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, NSW (Australia) and the AIAA Sydney Professional Section, set for 25–26 November 2020, will be fully online.

The University of New South Wales in Sydney, NSW will host this year’s Region VII Student Conference on 25–26 November. This will be a virtual event. Cohosted by the UNSW AIAA Student Branch and the AIAA Sydney Section. The 2020 Region VII Student Conference provides students with ample opportunity to network with their peers and professional members of industry and present their original research in front of a group of volunteer professional member judges who will provide them with feedback. Students will have the chance to compete for cash prizes in a fun-filled two-day event!
