AIAA/IEEE Electric Aircraft Technologies Symposium (EATS)

Building upon successful events in 2018–2020, the 2021 Electric Aircraft Technologies Symposium will look at progress over the past year and continue the discussion about the aerospace industry goals for future aircraft. To accommodate rapid growth in emerging markets and ensure sustainability of air travel, one approach being explored is using nontraditional aircraft propulsion: electric, turboelectric, or hybrid/electric powertrains. AIAA and IEEE crafted this unique symposium to bring the aerospace engineers and the electrical engineers together to discuss these topics and their challenges.

AIAA Webinar: Sustainability in Flight—Our Journey to Decarbonization

Information Paper: Sustainability in Flight: Our Journey to Decarbonization

Leaders in aviation will share perspectives on the industry’s commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. The expert panel will discuss efforts underway and the significant cooperation, innovation, and education required among all industry stakeholders to deliver on this important goal. This timely discussion will outline the major focus areas and necessary advancements in the sector for the next five years and the long-term roadmap necessary to achieve this goal. Learn about the newest R&D technologies, key barriers to progress, and how the next generation of aerospace engineers can be part of achieving our low-carbon future. Explore how aviation executives and policy makers can work together now to be on the leading edge of such cooperation, setting the course for continued industry leadership in the new era of aviation sustainability.

This webinar is open to the public and free of charge.

AIAA Design/Build/Fly

The AIAA through the Applied Aerodynamics, Aircraft Design, Design Engineering and Flight Test Technical Committees and the AIAA Foundation invites all university students to participate in the Cessna/Raytheon Missile Systems Student Design Build Fly competition. The contest will provide a real-world aircraft design experience for engineering students by giving them the opportunity to validate their analytic studies;

Student teams will design, fabricate, and demonstrate the flight capabilities of an unmanned, electric powered, radio controlled aircraft which can best meet the specified mission profile. The goal is a balanced design possessing good demonstrated flight handling qualities and practical and affordable manufacturing requirements while providing a high vehicle performance.

To encourage innovation and maintain a fresh design challenge for each new years participants, the design requirements and performance objective will be updated for each new contest year. The changes will provide new design requirements and opportunities, while allowing for application of technology developed by the teams from prior years.

SciTechxWebinar: Flying Is Safe—Is Air Travel?

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a substantial impact on commercial aviation and the over 65 million jobs directly and indirectly connected. The aerospace industry is not simply waiting for the pandemic to pass but is actively seeking and testing data to drive solutions today.

This two-part webinar was facilitated by well-known aerospace journalist Miles O’Brien and AIAA Executive Director Dan Dumbacher.

In Part I we heard from leaders of the global air travel ecosystem on how they are working together to build the traveling public’s confidence back with real data and communication.

Part II took a deeper technical dive into what and how data within the global air travel ecosystem are being tested, what are the results, and what are the next steps to ensure that not just flying is safe, but air travel is too.
