Tech Talk Series: Advances in Flight Mechanics Modeling and Simulation with Dr. Rafael Lugo

Come and enjoy a lunch & learn Technical Seminar hosted by the AIAA Hampton Roads Section.

Flight mechanics modeling and simulation is an area of continuous development. One of the industry-standard simulation tools in the Program to Optimize Spacecraft Trajectories II (POST2) is developed and maintained in-house at Langley Research Center. Recent uses of this tool include assessing GN&C performance of human-scale Lunar and Mars landing systems using generalized low- and medium-fidelity navigation sensor models required for precision landing. This talk will review recent POST2 simulation developments, as well as how current and planned advances in GN&C modeling enable rapid assessment of spacecraft integrated performance.

Dr. Rafael Lugo is an aerospace engineer in the Atmospheric Flight and Entry Systems Branch at NASA Langley Research Center. Since 2019 he has been a Civil Servant at NASA LaRC, and is currently the flight mechanics integrated performance simulation lead for the NASA/SpaceX Artemis Human Landing System. He is also the lead developer for the Program to Optimize Spacecraft Trajectories II (POST2).

Great Paper Airplane Contest

To celebrate Engineers’ Week, the AIAA Greater Huntsville Section, in collaboration with the UAH AIAA Student Branch, invites everyone to participate in the Great Paper Airplane Contest in the Conference Training Center Exhibit Hall at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. The event is open to both adults and kids of all ages. Attendees will build paper planes and compete in various categories like Aerobatics, Time of Flight, Distance, Accuracy, and an Artistic Category.

48th Annual Dayton-Cincinnati Aerospace Sciences Symposium (DCASS)

Presented by the AIAA Dayton-Cincinnati Section, the Dayton-Cincinnati Aerospace Sciences Symposium (DCASS) is a unique venue for technical interchange with members of the regional aerospace community. The symposium program includes up to 12 parallel sessions in the morning and afternoon and a keynote address mid-day.

Technical presentations are solicited in all general areas of aerospace S&T, including:

The Groundbreaking Experience of Sandra Durbin

Hosted by the AIAA Northern Ohio Section, in collaboration with the International Women’s Air and Space Museum.

The AIAA Northern Ohio Section is teaming up with the International Women’s Air and Space Museum to offer a dinner and program focused Sandra Durbin, who joined the U.S. Navy in 1966 and subsequently became the first Black female Air Traffic Controller in the U.S. Navy, while simultaneously becoming the first in the U.S. Durbin will explore her groundbreaking career and service at both Naval Air Stations Pensacola and North Island. She will also share her post-military service activities and her work as the 2022-2023 California AMVETS Commander engaging with and serving fellow veterans.

The Case for Space: How the Revolution in Spaceflight Opens a Future of Limitless Possibilities

The Orange County Section is hosting a talk by Robert Zubrin, President of Pioneer Astronautics, an aerospace R&D company located in Lakewood, Colorado; and is the Founder and President of the Mars Society. Uniting the entrepreneurial genius of Silicon Valley with the hard-won technological expertise of the old aerospace industry, a new generation of space companies has been born whose upstart members are revolutionizing our prospects. In this talk, Zubrin will examine the possibilities. Starting with a discussion of the present-day breakthroughs, Zubrin will take a deeper look at where it leads: to ultrafast global travel through suborbital space, to new industries on orbit, and to human settlement of the Moon, Mars, the asteroids, the outer solar system, and ultimately the stars.
