Brent Sherwood

Sherwood recently retired from Blue Origin as Senior Vice President, Advanced Development Programs. Before joining Blue Origin, he held various positions at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and The Boeing Company. Sherwood is a former chair of the AIAA Space Architecture Technical Committee.

Roger McNamara

Roger McNamara’s notable contributions to the aerospace industry and community over his 40-year career include early research into and characterization of the hazards of orbital debris to space vehicles and operations, and potential mitigation strategies; improvements in space vehicle design and development, for both manned and unmanned systems; and most significantly, leadership in advancing technological innovation for the new era of human deep space exploration.

He started his career as a mass properties and trajectory analyst for the NASA Space Shuttle Mission Integration Support Contract. Subsequently, he supported expendable launch vehicles including Titan II, Commercial Titan, Titan IV and the Athena Launch Vehicles. McNamara has also supported two Ground Missile Defense programs, serving as program manager for both the High-Performance Boost Vehicle (HPBV) Interceptor and the Boost Vehicle Plus (BV+) Interceptor programs.

McNamara’s extraordinary leadership of the historic NASA Orion Exploration Flight Test-1 successful mission was a critical step in NASA’s long-range plan to enable human exploration of deep space. The success of the EFT-1 flight permitted the Orion program to validate several new technology developments and applications for both design and production (separation mechanisms, heat shield material, Van Allen Belt radiation environment, software innovations, and the Orion Test Lab simulation environment). NASA Administrator Charles Bolden summed up the importance of the EFT-1 flight by saying “EFT-1 is the first step to Mars.”

McNamara’s early research into space debris generation and the associated long-term effects in the geosynchronous region has helped to heighten the awareness and associated concerns of the hazards associated with space debris for geosynchronous orbit (GEO) satellites. McNamara’s research has helped to lead both the U.S. and European aerospace communities to evaluate on orbit refueling, re-orbiting and de-orbiting at end of life, and using debris storage orbits. 

McNamara has served as an adjunct professor to the University of Denver in the Mechatronics Systems Engineering Master’s Degree Program, focusing on launch vehicles, orbital mechanics and space environments. This successful joint Lockheed Martin-DU program enhances the skill base of Lockheed Martin’s practicing engineers. McNamara has maintained close involvement with the University of Colorado through the Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences and the Colorado Center for Astrodynamics Research. He has given several lectures to CU classes, met with faculty regarding research and student support, and provided professional assistance to the student chapter of AIAA. He has invited faculty to attend major launches at Cape Kennedy and provided reports of his company’s space projects.

McNamara has been a member of the AIAA for 42 years, starting as a student member. He has a long history of leadership and innovation in the AIAA, specifically as a member/leader of national committees and TCs (finance, IDC, YMC, orbital debris subcommittee of the LV TC) and the Rocky Mountain Section Council. 

McNamara received his bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, and his master’s and doctorate degrees in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder.

Julie Van Kleeck

Julie Van Kleeck retired from Aerojet Rocketdyne last year as the  vice president of the Advanced Space and Launch Business Unit

Julie joined the company in 1981 as a systems engineer.  She specialized in system design and system architectures and was the Chief Systems Engineer on a number of first-generation missile defense systems such as the Advanced Liquid Axial Stage (ALAS) and Brilliant Pebbles.  Many of the technologies pioneered on those systems are still in use in today’s missile defense systems.  She was recognized at Aerojet, GenCorp, the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) office for her contributions to first-generation missile defense systems.

Later, in the company’s Space business area, she played pivotal strategy, capture, and program management roles prior to moving into executive management.  She worked on many Satellite, Spacecraft and Launch Vehicle propulsion programs always working to advance the state of the art of propulsion technology while maintaining focus on Mission Success.   Some of her key accomplishments included:  Managing the Atlas V Solid Rocket Motor program that developed and qualified the Solid Rockets that powered the Pluto New Horizons Mission; Leading the Electric Propulsion Development Organization Responsible for developing Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) Electric propulsion that revolutionized Satellite propulsion, Delivery of the nations next generation Human Space  Propulsion systems such as the Orion and RS25 for SLS.

Throughout her career she worked with DOD, NASA and commercial customers on efforts to advance launch and in-space propulsion and materials and manufacturing technologies.  She is widely known in the aerospace community and has held leadership roles in numerous industry organizations, including the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), Coalition for Deep Space Exploration (CDSE), Powerhouse Science Center and the SLS/Orion industry coalition.  She has also been a champion throughout her career for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Women in Aerospace (WIA), being a leader, both internally through Women in Network (WIN) and externally, through numerous industry groups such as WIA, California Assembly task force on STEM as well as working with local junior high and high schools.
