Congressional Visits Day 2021

2022 Date: Week of 14 March
(Registration to Open in Early January)
Advocate for Aerospace!

Congressional Visits Day (CVD) is an annual event that gathers U.S.-based AIAA members—engineers, scientists, researchers, and students—to meet with national decision makers and discuss critical community issues in aeronautics, astronautics, and defense. Through meetings with members of Congress, legislative staff, and other key stakeholders, CVD raises awareness of the long-term value that science, engineering, and technology bring to America.

AIAA SOSTC Improving Space Operations Workshop 2021

The 2021 AIAA SOSTC Improving Space Operations Workshop 2021, set for 6–8 April, will be held virtually.

You are invited to attend Improving Space Operations Workshop 2021, organized by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Space Operations & Support Technical Committee (SOSTC). The 2021 workshop will be held virtually 6–8 April and is jointly sponsored by AIAA, the SpaceOps Organization, Pearl River Technologies, Omitron, a.i. solutions, and ASRC Federal.

The objectives of the workshop are:

  • Investigate the development, implementation, and operation of systems that support space related activities.
  • Focus on operations technologies associated with space operations infrastructure, including the internet and other commercial technologies.
  • Develop positions on operational issues needing AIAA input from a cross section of member expertise. Identify approaches and standards for making operations more affordable, more flexible, more productive, and safer.

As in past years, the emphasis will be on small groups (virtual breakout sessions) working to advance the level of understanding in several technical areas relevant to space operations. For any questions, please contact [email protected].

Note: Restrictions will be in place for non-US citizens. Only employees (not contractors) of the following space agencies are welcomed to register and participate (JAXA, CNES, ESA, DLR, ASI, CSA, ISRO). Those individuals will need to be registered no later than TBD. Picture ID issued by the respective space agency will be required.

3rd Cognitive Communications for Aerospace Applications (CCAA) Workshop

The IEEE Cleveland Section and NASA Glenn Research Center invite participants to attend a three-day workshop: 21–23 June 2021, held virtually (more information coming soon).

This is the third workshop on cognitive telecommunications systems co-sponsored by IEEE Northeastern Ohio Chapter and NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, OH. The aim of this workshop is to bring together Researchers, Engineers, Technologists, and leaders across industry, government, and academia to discuss and present their recent advancements and future interest in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning with applications toward the development of cognitive telecommunication systems for aerospace.

ASCENDxWebinar: Space Policy: The Road Ahead

Several critical space policy decisions are looming in the year ahead, regardless of election year changes in the Administration or Congress. The panel will explore these decisions – from NASA’s human lander program to orbital debris frameworks to Space Force stand-up – and how they could impact civil, commercial, and national security space for years to come.

Speakers:
  • Moderator: Marcia Smith, Editor, Space Policy Online
  • Mary Lynne Dittmar, President and CEO, Coalition for Deep Space Exploration
  • Dan Dumbacher, Executive Director, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
  • Mike French, Vice President of Civil Space, Aerospace Industries Association

2020 Yvonne C. Brill Lectureship in Aerospace Engineering

AIAA/NAE Yvonne C. Brill Lectureship recognizes A. Miguel San Martin, NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory, for his role in the Mars Science Lab.

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) have selected Dr. Alejandro Miguel San Martin, Guidance & Control Section Chief Engineer at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) as the recipient of the fourth Yvonne C. Brill Lectureship in Aerospace Engineering. San Martin will present his lecture, “From Airbags to Wheels: The Evolution of GN&C for Entry, Descent, and Landing” on 7 October, 1100–1200 hrs ET, in conjunction with the virtual NAE Annual Meeting. Early in his career at JPL, San Martin participated in the Magellan mission to Venus and the Cassini mission to Saturn. He was later named Chief Engineer for the Guidance, Navigation, and Control system for the Pathfinder mission. He assumed the same role for the mission that landed the robotic vehicles Spirit and Opportunity on Mars in 2004. Most recently, he was the Chief Engineer for Guidance, Navigation, and Control for the Mars Science Laboratory, which landed Curiosity on the surface of Mars in 2012. He was a co-architect of Curiosity’s innovative SkyCrane landing architecture and also served as its Deputy Chief for Entry, Descent, and Landing. Throughout his career, San Martin has served as a panel consultant for various missions including Topex, Mars Polar Lander, Deep Impact, and Phoenix. San Martin has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University and an M.S. from MIT in Aeronautics and Astronautics Engineering with a specialization in Guidance, Navigation, and Control for interplanetary space exploration.

AIAA, with the participation and support of NAE, created the Yvonne C. Brill Lectureship in Aerospace Engineering to honor the memory of the late, pioneering rocket scientist, AIAA Honorary Fellow and NAE Member, Yvonne C. Brill. The lecture emphasizes research or engineering issues for space travel and exploration, aerospace education of students and the public, and other aerospace issues such as ensuring a diverse and robust engineering community.
