Not that long ago, “Green Aviation” and minimizing the environmental impact of aviation was an aspirational goal, but today it is a goal for survival. The global aviation community has been proactively collaborating to set industry-wide goals and targets to reduce aircraft emissions, but will it be enough to sustain the industry as new entrants and worldwide demand drive exponential growth? Many think it is not enough and that the industry needs need to be much more aggressive. This panel will take a systems-thinking approach across the aircraft lifecycle to focus on compressing the design cycle, optimizing operations, maximizing energy savings, and accelerating the development and commercialization of new and promising technologies.

Forum 360: Is Hypersonic Flight The Next Big Thing?
Over the years, large amounts of time, energy and resources have gone toward the advancement of critical technologies for sustained hypersonic flight. Perhaps today these critical technologies are ready for integration into a sustained flight vehicle system. This panel provides a lively discussion of what has been accomplished so far to date, lessons learned along the way, what has been enabled, and a look at the remaining challenges to achieve reliable and sustained hypersonic flight. The historical context will provide a review of the successes, retired challenges, and remaining challenges after NASP, X-43, and X-51 by leading figures from those programs. The panel is eminently qualified to propose to the community potential paths forward to retire remaining risks to routine, reusable, hypersonic flight.

Technical Committee Showcase
The AIAA Technical Committee (TC) Showcase provides an opportunity for SciTech Forum attendees to find out more about AIAA’s TCs. The TCs are grouped into six groups under the Technical Activities Division: Aerospace Design and Structures; Aerospace Sciences; Information Systems; Propulsion and Energy; Aircraft Technology, Integration, and Operations; and, Space and Missiles. Representatives from all six groups will be present to answer questions and provide personal perspectives on the value of TC membership.
Forum 360: High Performance Computing’s Impact on Aerospace Prediction
The Aerospace industry has a strong desire and need to extend development of their CFD capability as described in the CFD 2030 Vision set forth by NASA and Boeing with input from government, industry, and academia. However, limitations of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) methods are preventing us from analyzing vehicles at the edges of their envelopes where performance typically drives designs. Hybrid RANS/Large Eddy Simulation (LES), LES, and Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) computations require emerging High Performance Computing (HPC) hardware to be useful to vehicle design. The trend we have been taking advantage of over the last several decades is called Moore’s Law, which has led to the performance of machines roughly doubling every 18 months. Many hardware specialists are predicting the end of this performance trend for current hardware and software architectures due to a variety of reasons. Continuation of Moore’s Law will likely require new computational strategies and computer architectures. Our current CFD software will not execute efficiently, if at all, without a conscious effort on our part to prepare it for the future because it is no longer as simple as just buying a bigger/faster computer. In order to accomplish the CFD2030 Vision, HPC issues will have to be discussed and strategies for overcoming them planned for.
