RLA Lunch & Learn: Shaping the Workforce of Tomorrow

We are living through a fundamental transformation in the way we work. Organizations achieve goals by working with interdisciplinary teams of individuals from diverse educational backgrounds, work cultures, skill sets, and attitudes. As the workforce becomes steadily more diverse, it presents employers with a myriad of both opportunities and challenges. Although diversity in the workforce has been shown to have tremendous value to organizations, a lack of inclusion poses a challenge. Further, higher levels of automation that are replacing human tasks are changing the skills that organizations are looking for in their people. These momentous changes raise huge organizational, talent and HR challenges. To discuss these challenges and the steps we need to shape the workforce of tomorrow, the AIAA YPs put together a panel of learning practitioners and industry experts.

Rising Leaders in Aerospace Lunch Panel: I Got My Dream Job, Now What?

College has quick timelines, short turnarounds, and new subjects each semester. Many college students have long term goals of working in a certain discipline. After graduation, many achieve these goals and get a job where they want, working on what they want. But the real world moves much slower than university – future steps, promotions, or leadership can be 10-20 year goals. Even a dream job may become tedious. This panel includes aerospace leaders to help the young professional answer the question – where do I go from here?

Closing Remarks for the MLK Day Tribute

The concluding finale to the day’s tribute will be presented by Dexter Johnson, PhD – Engineer, Educator, Entrepreneur, and Minister. Dr. Johnson is the NASA Technical Fellow for Loads and Dynamics, supporting the NASA Engineering and Safety Center. Johnson also is an AIAA Associate Fellow and this year’s recipient of the AIAA Mary W. Jackson Award, recognizing his significant contributions to advancing diversity and inclusion within the aerospace and astronautics community through his AIAA collaborations with students and industry partners. He extends his expertise through his service as the NSBE Aerospace SIG Aerospace Partnership Director.

Forum 360: Collaboration to Mitigate the Risks of COVID-19

Co-sponsored by International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS)

As the world struggled to combat COVID, the aerospace industry stepped up – including making and transporting PPE, designing ventilators, assisting the supply chain, and helping local communities. Traditional industry stovepipes were broken down quickly as we solved problems, expedited help, and worked together. Hear from the international community on how aviation has worked cross-industry and cross-functionally during the pandemic, and how those efforts will sustain the recovery of the aviation sector.

Idea Challenge: Applying Aerospace Technologies to Solve Societal Problems

Now in its fourth year, the AIAA Idea Challenge at AIAA SciTech Forum provides young professionals with the opportunity to develop a pitch for an idea or product that fits under the challenge theme. Each team will present ideas for how aerospace technologies and techniques can contribute solutions to large global issues, such as climate change, food sustainability, or access to resources. By introducing these ideas, they will showcase how the aerospace industry acts as a pathfinder for humanity. Teams comprising a mix of industry, government, and academic members will present their pitches during this session. Audience members can ask questions, evaluate the pitches, and choose the winning team.
