Multiphysics-Focused Simulation Technology for Hypersonic R&D

Hear from Hexagon about its multiphysics-focused computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation software that has been developed in collaboration with the National Institute of Aerospace to address some of the numerical challenges specific to simulating hypersonic flight – stability, robustness, and coupling to related physics-like structural mechanics and kinematics. Details of the hypersonic flow solver, the co-simulation platform, and the results of their latest validation studies will be reviewed.

Sonic Boom and the X-59

Description

Lockheed Martin was awarded a contract to manufacture the X-59, a NASA experimental demonstrator aircraft designed to mitigate the adverse impact of sonic boom through advanced aircraft shaping methodologies. Initial flights and envelope expansion of the X-59 is expected to begin within the next couple of years, followed by community tests at multiple locations. This discussion highlights the vision for commercial supersonic flight, sonic boom assessments of the X-59 and details of the low-boom flight demonstration mission.

NASA’S BIG (Breakthrough, Innovative and Game-changing) Idea Challenge

Hear about the AIAA Caltech Student Chapter’s success story after being twice selected a finalist for the NASA BIG Idea Challenge. Their 2021 project, HOMES EDS (Electrodynamic Dust Shielding), was also the winner of the AIAA Region VI Student Conference in 2021 and the AIAA International Student Conference held at the 2022 AIAA SciTech Forum. They will share their 2022 project, Lunar Architecture for Tree Traversal In-service-of Cabled Exploration (LATTICE), which was also the winner of the AIAA Region VI Student Conference in 2022 and won the Most Visionary Concept Award at the 2022 NASA BIG Idea Challenge Forum.

NASA Sustainable Flight National Partnership Project Managers Panel

The NASA Sustainable Flight National Partnership (SFNP) mission is to accelerate toward net-zero carbon emissions for our next-generation subsonic transports by 2050. Project managers supporting the SFNP mission will introduce their projects and provide insight as to how they became a NASA project manager, including sharing some of their technical and leadership challenges and opportunities.

SUAS/ALE Aerial Recovery

SUAS/ALEs have become valuable military assets but have limitations on their endurance and range. Further, most currently are recovered via belly or skid landing, which is not possible for operations over blue water. Even when recovering on land, the ALE’s airframes and payloads are jeopardized. To remain affordable, they must utilize inexpensive sensors with limited performance. ALE Aerial Recovery will be a game changer: ALEs can be recovered over blue water and no longer will airframes and payloads be jeopardized. ALEs will be able to carry high performance sensors that will dramatically improve the ALE’s effectiveness. This presentation will show GA-ASI’s concept for SUAS/ALE aerial recovery, the mission cost benefit of SUAS/ALE aerial recovery, and our technical roadmap.
