AIAA to Recognize Excellence with Awards at the 2024 AIAA AVIATION Forum

2024 AIAA Aircraft Design Award

Paul L. Fontenrose, Vice President Engineering, Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems

Award Citation: For the design of the next evolution of the U.S. Air Force strategic bomber fleet and the world’s first sixth-generation aircraft to reach the skies.

The AIAA Aircraft Design Award is presented to an individual or team for an original concept or career contributions leading to a significant advancement in aircraft design or design technology.

2024 AIAA Fluid Dynamics Award

Mark Glauser, Emeritus and Research Professor, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Syracuse University

Award Citation: For seminal contributions on the innovative use of multi-point low dimensional methods for understanding and control of turbulent flows.

The AIAA Fluid Dynamics Award is presented for outstanding contributions to the understanding of the behavior of liquids and gases in motion as related to need in aeronautics and astronautics.

2024 AIAA Ground Testing Award

Marvin Sellers, Subject Matter Expert, 716th TS, Axient, Inc.

Award Citation: In recognition of decades of tremendous contributions to the national ground test and evaluation community, most particularly in the advancement of pressure-sensitive paint techniques.

The AIAA Ground Testing Award is presented for outstanding achievement in the development or effective utilization of technology, procedures, facilities, or modeling techniques for flight simulation, space simulation, propulsion testing, aerodynamic testing, or other ground testing associated with aeronautics and astronautics.

2024 AIAA Losey Atmospheric Sciences Award

Duane Waliser, Chief Scientist, Earth Science and Technology Directorate, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Award Citation: For highly impactful science and leadership contributions to atmospheric and Earth system science that have progressively advanced and leveraged space-based Earth observations.

The AIAA Robert M. Losey Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the atmospheric sciences as applied to the advancement of aeronautics and astronautics.

2024 AIAA Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Award

Kumar Bhatia, Boeing Senior Technical Fellow, The Boeing Company (Retired)

Award Citation: For pioneering the use of multidisciplinary design optimization in transport aircraft and developing a rapid approach for aircraft MDO employing appropriate fidelity analyses.

The AIAA Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the development and/or application of techniques of multidisciplinary design optimization in the context of aerospace engineering.

2024 AIAA Piper General Aviation Award

Noel Duerksen, Consultant

Award Citation: For contributions to general aviation safety and ease of use including the first certified envelope protection system and the first certified autonomous emergency landing system in general aviation.

The AIAA Piper General Aviation Award is presented for outstanding contributions leading to the advancement of general aviation by an individual or group.

2024 AIAA Plasmadynamics and Lasers Award

Kurt A. Polzin, Chief Engineer, Space Nuclear Propulsion, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center

Award Citation: For seminal modeling of pulsed inductive plasma accelerators providing both a fundamental understanding of underlying physics and practical approaches to optimization of energy deposition.

The AIAA Plasmadynamics and Lasers Award recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the understanding of the physical properties and dynamical behavior of matter in the plasma state and lasers as related to aeronautics and astronautics.

2024 AIAA Thermophysics Award

Greg F. Naterer, Vice President, Academic and Research, University of Prince Edward Island

Award Citation: For significant contributions to heat transfer in multiphase flows, thermochemical processes, and thermal design using entropy and the second law of thermodynamics.

The AIAA Thermophysics Award is presented for an outstanding singular or sustained technical or scientific contribution by an individual in thermophysics, specifically as related to the study and application of the properties and mechanisms involved in thermal energy transfer and the study of environmental effects on such properties and mechanisms.

AIAA Statement on Fourth SpaceX Starship Test Flight

June 6, 2024 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) issued the following statement from AIAA CEO Dan Dumbacher:

“Congratulations to the SpaceX team on today’s test flight of Starship from Starbase, Texas. The live images from onboard the vehicle give everyone a breathtaking view of these test flights.

We are excited to witness this new launch vehicle continuing its development toward commercial operation. The art and science of engineering requires testing. From today’s flight, we know the team is gaining valuable data they will learn from as they keep improving Starship’s design.

It is important to see commercial space launch companies advancing technology to extend the human neighborhood from low Earth orbit to the moon, and on to Mars. Expanding these boundaries takes innovation and hard work.

AIAA recognizes the countless industry professionals who have helped design, build, and test Starship. We applaud AIAA Corporate Member SpaceX for taking this step forward in shaping the future of aerospace.”

“Congratulations to the entire Starliner team and NASA Astronauts Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Sunita Williams on their launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida. We are excited to witness this new capability coming online. The entire team has worked diligently to address the challenges in reaching this day. We will be eagerly following the crew’s journey.

This mission demonstrates the powerful collaboration that is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, including the launch of Boeing’s Starliner capsule on an Atlas V rocket provided by United Launch Alliance (ULA). This program is important to open up access to space for more human activities. The Starliner mission is helping extend the human neighborhood beyond planet Earth.

On behalf of the 30,000 professional and student members of AIAA, congratulations to the entire Starliner team on their accomplishment. AIAA recognizes the countless industry professionals who have helped design, build, test, and operate Starliner. AIAA Statement on the Passing of Jeff Bingham

May 23, 2024 – Reston, Va – AIAA CEO Dan Dumbacher made the following statement:

“AIAA is saddened by the news of the passing of Jeff Bingham. Jeff was a leading influence in the aerospace community helping shape U.S. space policy. We are grateful for his bipartisan, professional approach that propelled the nation’s efforts in space for the future.

Jeff was instrumental in developing the ISS, championing its use as an orbiting scientific laboratory for the benefit of humanity. In addition to his work on the ISS and the National Lab, he was influential via NASA Authorization Acts to establish the objectives and priorities for human space exploration.

Jeff was an AIAA Associate Fellow. We were honored that he shared meaningful insights with our audiences at several AIAA events, helping our community make progress toward the next exploration goals.

His dedication to the aerospace community continues, with his request in lieu of flowers for donations made to any space-related charity in his name to support future space explorers and leaders.

We send our condolences to his family and friends. Godspeed Jeff.”

AIAA Statement on Blue Origin’s Successful NS-25 Mission

We congratulate Mason, Sylvain, Ed, Ken, Carol, and Gopi on their inspirational mission. We share the excitement around the NS-25 mission that embodies the promises of space for the benefit of Earth.

We are especially thrilled to celebrate Ed Dwight’s flight. After being selected as the nation’s first Black astronaut candidate in the 1960s, Ed was not granted the opportunity to fly to space – until now. We hope Ed’s flight inspires future generations to pursue their dreams and persevere. We celebrate this spirit in the new Space4All campaign aiming to inspire, prepare, and employ a diverse space workforce. Space4All is the national space STEM awareness campaign being led by a public-private partnership including AIAA and Blue Origin, and more than 150 corporate, federal, non-profit, and community-based organizations including the National Space Council and the U.S. Department of Education.”

AIAA Announces 2024 Design/Build/Fly (DBF) Competition Winners

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 22, 2024 – Wichita, Kan. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) announced the winners of the 28th Annual AIAA DBF Competition:

  • 1st Place ($3,000): Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, Florida
  • 2nd Place ($2,000): Georgia Institute of Technology
  • 3rd Place ($1,500): University of Washington, Seattle
  • Best Design Report ($100): University of Southern California

This year marks the largest-ever flyoff participation, with more than 1,000 students on 93 university teams attending onsite. The flyoff was hosted by AIAA Corporate Member Textron Aviation in Wichita, Kan. Teams from 12 countries, including 32 US states participated in the full DBF Competition, including submitting design reports and attending the flyoff.

This year’s flight objective was to design, build, and test a remotely operated radio control airplane for Urban Air Mobility. The airplane must be able to conduct a delivery flight, a medical transport flight, and an urban taxi flight. Teams also conducted a ground mission demonstrating how quickly they can change their aircraft configuration from delivery to medical transport to urban air taxi.

“Design/Build/Fly is a highlight of the year,” said AIAA CEO Dan Dumbacher. “Aerospace teaches us to adapt to the unexpected. It’s a great lesson for students as they prepare to enter this vibrant and meaningful field. The lessons learned and connections made here will be the foundation for their future careers. Congratulations to the winning teams and all the teams that made it here to the DBF flyoff!”

Russ Althof, director of the DBF Organizing Committee, said, “We owe our thanks for the success of the DBF Competition to the efforts of many volunteers from Textron Aviation, Raytheon, and the AIAA sponsoring Technical Committees: Applied Aerodynamics, Aircraft Design, Flight Test, and Design Engineering. These volunteers collectively set the rules for the contest, publicize the event, gather entries, judge the written proposals and reports, and execute the flyoff.

The 2025 AIAA DBF Competition will be held in April 2025 hosted in Tucson, Ariz., by Raytheon.

2024 AIAA DEFENSE Forum to Focus on Accelerating Technology Transition for Battlespace Dominance

March 22, 2024 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) has announced its three-day program for the 2024 AIAA DEFENSE Forum, 16–18 April at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Laurel, Maryland. This year’s program will explore the critical role of the science and technology community in providing innovative and operationally relevant capabilities to dominate the battlespace. This Secret/NOFORN event provides the ideal venue for leaders from government, military, industry, and academia to advance and accelerate innovation. Registration for the 2024 AIAA DEFENSE Forum is open to the national security community.
