Economically Viable Lunar Settlement (ASCENDxCo-Lab)

This event is part of the ASCENDxSeries, a collection of online events powered by AIAA and ASCEND—the new, global platform for innovation that’s accelerating space commerce and new discoveries.

On 2 April 2020, NASA released the “Plan for Sustained Lunar Exploration and Development,” in response to direction from the National Space Council. As humanity works to develop a “vibrant Earth-Moon future,” we must think not only about role of space agencies and the technologies required, but also about the economic conditions needed to sustain humanity in space. This virtual collaborative working session will collect expert feedback to identify both the technology and information gaps and the economic conditions needed to support long term settlement of the moon and Mars.Working Group.

As we embark on a bold new era of space exploration, AIAA’s ASCEND provides you with something few space events can: a seat at the table.

The new space economy is ready for takeoff. In the coming years, it’s anticipated to skyrocket from $4 billion today to more than $1 trillion. This phenomenal growth will be driven by a number of factors, but none more important than you.

Why should I attend?

At ASCEND you’ll:

  • Plot the course of the industry’s future
  • Pressure test ideas and forecast emerging trends
  • Advance your career and showcase your expertise
  • Reveal new ideas and technological prowess
  • Test new products and meet the people behind them
  • Connect and problem-solve with experts across every sector
  • Find non-endemic partners to expand your reach and broaden your market
Who should attend?

During ASCEND, you’ll have a roll-up-your sleeves, hands-on opportunity to influence the course and trajectory the space economy takes into the future. It’s the first event of its kind to convene the entire international space ecosystem—not just the traditional players like propulsion, commerce, and national security, but also sectors like hospitality, mining, venture capital, tourism, and other private enterprises that will play an important role in making space commerce commonplace. ASCEND is not about making history but the future.

This is the meeting of the minds that you can’t afford to miss.

Who is speaking?

ASCEND will feature leading voices from the space community and beyond. Stay tuned for our keynote announcements. Current speakers include representatives from:

ASCENDxNuclear: Nuclear’s Future Role in Space

The growing worldwide desire for a long-term sustainable human presence on the moon, emerging DoD capability needs, and the desire to send humans to Mars in the next 10–20 years may usher in a new Space Age that includes nuclear reactor-powered propulsion and power. Join industry leaders and the greater ASCEND community as we discuss nuclear’s future role in space.

Nuclear power and propulsion technologies have been explored since the dawn of the Space Age. Originally fueled by the Space Race, activities were primarily in the United States and the USSR, the two big nuclear powers at that time. Since then, challenges in funding, safety, policy, and treaties have impeded the progression and maturity of most of these technologies for space applications.

Recent technology advancements, along with political/world changes relative to space, are creating new opportunities and needed capabilities.
