Aerospace Resume & Interview Workshop

On 24 February at 1900 EST AIAA Central Florida Section is hosting a resume and interviewing workshop for early-career aerospace professionals and students looking to enter the aerospace workforce. Jose Castillo and Liam O’Connor from Lockheed Martin will present a workshop on Interviewing and Walter Hammond, NASA (retired), will present a workshop on resume writing.

Once There was an Arrow — “Black Friday” of the Canadian Aviation Industry

Mark your calendar! Join the AIAA New England Section for the expert webinar by Colonel Walter Gordon – Chairman of the AIAA Niagara Frontier Section and deputy chair of the AIAA History Committee!

Avro Canada completed and flew five prototypes of the CF-105 Arrow supersonic interceptor before the program was terminated by Prime Minister John Diefenbaker on February 20, 1959. Known ever since as Black Friday, on that day over 14,000 employees lost their jobs and the Canadian aerospace industry changed forever, never again to produce a state-of-the-art military aircraft. One of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world at the time, the Arrow was an almost inconceivable achievement by a company that only thirteen years earlier was manufacturing Lancaster bombers under license during World War II.

Northwest Florida Section Engineers Week Tech Talks

John ValasekMultiple-Time-Scale Nonlinear Output Feedback Control of Systems With Model Uncertainties by Dr. John Valasek

Abstract: The Geometric Singular Perturbation theory is a powerful control law development tool for multiple-timescale systems because it provides physical insight into the evolution of the states in more than one timescale. This presentation presents the theory for a nonlinear, multiple-time-scale, output feedback tracking controller for a class of nonlinear, nonstandard systems with slow and fast states, slow and fast actuators, and model uncertainties. The class of systems is motivated by aircraft with uncertain inertias, control derivatives, engine time-constant, and without direct measurement of angle-of-attack and sideslip angle.

Manoranjan MajjiInformation front-end of aerospace systems: recent advances and experiences by Dr. Manoranjan Majji

Abstract: Recent advances in information fusion and smart sensing technologies for relative navigation of aerospace vehicles are discussed. Sensor physics and information processing principles to integrate vision-based sensor data with inertial measurements are presented, along with discussions associated with signal processing of an ultra-precise optomechanical accelerometer being developed at Texas A&M. The talk also discusses aeromagnetic sensing and localization approaches as potential alternatives to the global positioning system based approaches for localization.

Women in Aerospace: Nagin Cox, NASA Spacecraft Operations Engineer

The Portland State AIAA Student Branch is excited to host Nagin Cox virtually on February 25th! Nagin has been exploring since she decided as a teenager that she wanted to work at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She was born in Bangalore, India, and grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Nagin has held leadership and system engineering positions on interplanetary robotic missions including the Galileo mission to Jupiter, the Mars Exploration Rovers, the Kepler exoplanet hunter, InSight, the Mars Curiosity Rover and now the 2020 Perseverance Rover. She was also involved in the MOXIE (Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment) team which will prototype making oxygen on Mars from the Martian atmosphere. She is currently a Tactical Mission Lead on the Mars Curiosity Rover as well as the Mars2020 Perseverance Rover.

This event is in collaboration with WIS, SWE, VRS, SHPE, and MENASA Program Initiative and was funded with the help of AIAA.

Journey Through the Night Sky

Join the AIAA Greater Philadelphia Section in exploring your night sky as they show where you can find the nearest planets and constellations and learn how to spot them using only your eyes and sense of direction! To celebrate this year’s Engineering Week, AAIA GPS is hosting an exciting virtual event with the Discovery Center which offers plenty of engaging educational opportunities. The Discovery Center educational director McAuliffe-Shepard will talk about their location and lead a “walk through the night sky”, outlining the amazing things everyone can see by looking out on a clear night.

Engineers Week 2023 Kickoff

Hosted by the AIAA San Diego Section, in collaboration with the San Diego Engineering Council (SDCEC).

Come join AIAA SD and the San Diego County Engineering Council (SDCEC) as we kickoff Engineers Week 2023! This event will feature booths from local engineering societies and companies, STEM outreach, and an awards ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of local engineers. Tickets can be purchased directly from SDCEC at the link below

Engineer’s Week Banquet – Huntsville

The annual Huntsville E-Week dinner returns in-person for 2023. Join us as we celebrate the local engineering community!

The annual Huntsville Engineers’ Week awards dinner returns in-person. Join us for this event at the Jackson Center, featuring a social, keynote speaker, and awards from multiple engineering organizations in our communityOur ticketing deadline is February 14th, 2023. Organization of this year’s event is led by the AIAA Greater Huntsville Section. Partner organizations that will also be recognizing members include the Huntsville Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers Huntsville Section, Aerojet Rocketdyne, University of Alabama in Huntsville, and Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical University.

James Sergeant: X-59 Speaker Event

We are excited to host James Sergeant and his experience with the X-59 this Thursday, 5PM, in the UTDesign Makerspace!

James Sergeant has had an extensive career at Lockheed Martin (Skunkworks) and is a current flight test engineer at Virgin Galactic. He has worked with the development of the X-59 and is excited to talk about his experiences!

The X-59 is an experimental super-sonic aircraft meant to revolutionize modern aviation. The X-59 was developed specifically to soften the “thump” associated with surpassing speeds of Mach 1 (super-sonic). Join us to learn more about how this aircraft was developed and how it is ushering in a new era of flight!

See you there!

Professional Panel Discussion

The University of West Florida AIAA Student Branch invites you to attend a Professional Panel discussion on Wednesday, February 21 from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. Central Standard Time. Experienced professionals will be encouraged to share their experiences: things they like about their careers, things they don’t like, things they would have done differently, things they are glad they did in college that have helped their careers, advice they would give their younger selves, and so on. If you are in the Pensacola area, you can attend in person at the University of West Florida campus; if you are farther away, you can dial in through a Zoom link.

Please contact Student Branch Chair Julia Kondrat’yev if you are interested in participating (as a student or experienced professional).
