AIAA Statement on the End of the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter Mission

January 31, 2024 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) CEO Dan Dumbacher made the following statement:

“We join NASA, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the entire aerospace community in marking the end of mission for the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter on 25 January 2024. What a mission it was – 72 powered controlled flights on another planet.

We’ll remember the historic date and location of Ingenuity’s first flight, 19 April 2021, at Jezero Crater, Wright Brothers Field, Mars. Ingenuity’s remarkable mission of taking off-world risks proves anything is possible. Going from a flight test experiment to an operational scout is an amazing accomplishment.

AIAA was honored to present the 2021 AIAA Space Systems Award to the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter team, “For the design and flight test validation of the first helicopter designed for flight at Mars.” In addition, ASCEND was honored to host the 2021 NASA JPL William H. Pickering Lecture on the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter.

Over the years, innovators have chronicled their work on rotorcraft designed for missions on other planets and moons by authoring articles for AIAA peer-reviewed journals, books, and meeting papers for AIAA forums. Their original research results and technological progress have been published in AIAA’s Aerospace Research Central (ARC) at arc.aiaa.org, the leading source of aerospace industry archives. AIAA Statement on the Axiom Mission (AX-2) Launch

“On behalf of the 30,000 professional and student members of AIAA, we congratulate the entire Axiom team on its successful AX-2 launch onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. We applaud this private mission to the International Space Station (ISS), showing how NASA and private industry are working together to extend the human neighborhood into low Earth orbit in meaningful ways.

In addition to expanding commercial research opportunities in the ISS orbiting laboratory, the AX-2 mission adds more names to the growing list of astronauts due to commercial space activity. We are seeing a new breed of explorer emerge in low Earth orbit – from a retired NASA astronaut returning to space like Commander Peggy Whitson, to adventurer and Pilot John Shoffner, to two crewmembers from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. AIAA Statement on the Indian Space Research Organisation Chandrayaan-3 Mission

“Congratulations to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on its successful landing at the south pole of the moon! We were thrilled watching the Chandrayaan-3 mission unfold in real time. We will be eagerly following the progress of the rover, Pragyan, and the ongoing mission in the coming days.

As the professional technical society for aerospace engineers, our members appreciate and understand the difficulty of this mission’s engineering challenges. Safely landing on the moon is a challenge and to reach the lunar south pole is an even greater accomplishment.

The ISRO team’s resilience is admirable. The Chandrayaan team has persevered over time to continue advancing its lunar exploration program. They have reached an historic milestone making India the fourth spacefaring nation to land on the moon. AIAA is honored to support the four AIAA student branches at universities in India and about 400 AIAA members across India.

We applaud India’s commitment to a safe, peaceful, and prosperous future in space, especially as it joined the Artemis Accords earlier this year. We believe the Artemis Accords establish important principles to guide cooperation among nations exploring space, including those participating in NASA’s Artemis program. “Congratulations to Victor Glover, Jeremy Hansen, Christina Hammock Koch, and Reid Wiseman on being named the four explorers who comprise the crew of the Artemis II mission. You are inspiring the Artemis generation through this first crewed mission to the vicinity of the moon in more than 50 years. Congratulations to NASA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) on this historic announcement.

We were thrilled to witness the engineering marvel of the successful Artemis I mission last year. The Artemis program – including the Space Launch System rocket, Orion spacecraft, and the ground systems needed to launch them – provides a fundamental new capability enabling us to retain and grow global cooperation and peace in space by establishing a sustainable presence on the moon in preparation for human exploration beyond Earth’s orbit. We look forward to the continued progress of the Artemis program by the NASA/industry team and the international partners to land the first woman and the first person of color on the lunar surface in the future.

AIAA Mourns the Passing of Michael Collins

April 28, 2021 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) mourns the passing of Michael Collins, Apollo 11 astronaut and AIAA Fellow. AIAA Executive Director Dan Dumbacher made the following statement:

“Michael Collins was a space pioneer. As a U.S. Air Force test pilot and NASA astronaut, he pushed the boundaries of our knowledge about flight and the human spirit. We especially remember him and his crewmates, Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, for their bravery and courage in twice traversing the wine-dark sea of space to successfully complete the historic Apollo 11 mission. As an AIAA Fellow since 1976, he was recognized for his distinction in aeronautics and astronautics, having made valuable contributions to the field.

Collins’ advocacy and enthusiasm for space, as well as for STEM education before it had a name, are examples for us all to follow. We are grateful for what he showed us about how to explore our universe when he said, ‘I think a future flight should include a poet, a priest and a philosopher… we might get a much better idea of what we saw.’ Ad Astra, Michael Collins.”

AIAA Marks First Flight on Another Planet

“What an amazing sight – an aircraft flying over Mars! The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter made the first ever powered, controlled flight on another planet today. Congratulations to our corporate member, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the whole Ingenuity team. Your innovative and inspirational thinking continues shaping the future of aerospace.

“We all know the story of Orville and Wilbur Wright taking a huge risk and proving to the world that heavier-than-air, powered flight was possible. Today, we saw how taking off-world risks proves anything is possible. From this day forward, we’ll remember 19 April 2021, at Jezero Crater, Wright Brothers Field, Mars, just as we have remembered 17 December 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Earth.

“Earlier this year, we watched the Perseverance rover’s landing on Mars, carrying Ingenuity onboard and showing us what your motto – Dare Mighty Things – means. “We learned of the Russian Federation ASAT Test in the midst of the 2021 ASCEND event, where many of the world’s foremost experts on the sustainable uses of space were gathered,” said Rob Meyerson, ASCEND Executive Producer and former President of Blue Origin. “Government and commercial activity in low Earth orbit continues to grow exponentially. Dangerous actions like this test introduce risks to achieving our off-world future. The ASCEND community encourages the global aerospace community to strive for the safe and sustainable uses of space to benefit humanity and improve life on Earth.” ASCEND is powered by AIAA.

“This reckless act only reinforces the urgency of addressing the growing orbital debris problem, as well as the need to develop a national space traffic management (STM) system. The Institute has gathered a group of major stakeholders representing various interests to help address this critical STM issue. This includes ongoing outreach to decision makers in Washington, DC. AIAA Announces its Class of 2025 Associate Fellows

September 23, 2024 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is pleased to announce its newly elected Class of 2025 Associate Fellows. AIAA will formally honor and induct the class at the AIAA Associate Fellows Induction Ceremony and Dinner, Wednesday, 8 January 2025, at the Hyatt Regency Orlando during the 2025 AIAA SciTech Forum, 6–10 January 2025, Orlando, Florida.

“Congratulations to each member of the Class of 2025 Associate Fellows,” said AIAA President Dan Hastings. “This distinguished group of professionals has made significant and lasting contributions to the aerospace profession. They exemplify a dedication to excellence in advancing their specific technical disciplines. We are proud of their achievements. They are shaping the future of aerospace.”

The grade of Associate Fellow recognizes individuals “who have accomplished or been in charge of important engineering or scientific work, or who have done original work of outstanding merit, or who have otherwise made outstanding contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics.” To be selected as an Associate Fellow an individual must be an AIAA Senior Member in good standing, with at least 12 years of professional experience, and be recommended by three AIAA   members.

“The AIAA Associate Fellows personify the innovation that drives our industry forward,” said AIAA CEO Dan Dumbacher. “The members of the Class of 2025 Associate Fellows embody the ingenuity that is crucial for developing solutions to the complex questions raised across aeronautics, aerospace R&D, and space. “AIAA welcomes the long overdue new monument honoring Apollo 1 Astronauts Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Edward White, and Roger B. Chaffee recently placed at Arlington National Cemetery. It appropriately reads, “Ad astra per aspera,” or “Through hardships to the stars.”

We remember the tragedy on January 27, 1967, when a flash fire occurred in the command module during a launch pad test of the Apollo/Saturn space vehicle and the three astronauts died. We commend the efforts of NASA and the space community to remind us of the sacrifices astronauts and their families have made in our pursuit of the space frontier.

As the largest professional technical society for the aerospace profession, AIAA recognizes the Apollo 1 crew as integral to the success of the Apollo program as the foundation of the ongoing human exploration of space. AAM could embody the single greatest transformation for aviation business, science, and policy – and public perceptions – since the emergence of mainstream commercial aviation in the mid-20th century. With clear operational guidelines, regulations, and standards for accommodating and incorporating autonomy, we see a thriving integrated urban and regional airspace in the next decade. The benefits of autonomy will enhance safety for everyone and enable capabilities we are only just imagining.

AIAA Statement on FY22 National Defense Authorization Act

“AIAA applauds the passage of this important legislation, which includes roughly $740 billion in discretionary funds for the Department of Defense. It authorizes $146.9 billion for procurement programs and $117.7 billion for research, development, test, and evaluation programs. The legislation addresses many of the nation’s national security needs, especially in space, aeronautics, missile defense, and cybersecurity operations, as well as helps maintain our technological edge in an era of increased competition.

Since 1961, Congress has worked in a bipartisan fashion to address the needs of our warfighters and our national security industrial base. Both Congress and the administration have made it a priority to focus on national security space, including hypersonic technologies, and modernize our defenses and maintain our preeminence over our adversaries. The aerospace and defense industry is critical to our economic and national security and continues to be an essential part of our nation’s ongoing recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Boston Logan International Airport Wins Prestigious 2025 Jay Hollingsworth Speas Airport Award

February 6, 2025 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) congratulates Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) as the winner of the 2025 Jay Hollingsworth Speas Airport Award for designing new low-noise flight procedures to actively reduce aviation noise impacts around the airport while also providing a reduction in fuel burn.

The Jay Hollingsworth Speas Airport Award honors an individual or individuals judged to have contributed most significantly in recent years to the enhancement of relationships between airports and/or heliports and other surrounding environments via exemplary innovation that might be replicated elsewhere. The award is cosponsored by AIAA, the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), and the Airport Consultants Council (ACC).

“The Award Committee is pleased to recognize the excellent collaborative work by MIT and Massport to reduce aircraft noise for residents under Boston Logan International Airport approach paths while simultaneously reducing fuel burn and distance traveled,” said R. Dixon “Dirk” Speas Jr., brother of Jay Hollingsworth Speas in whose memory the award was established 40 years ago by their father, R. Dixon Speas. “It is our hope that other airports and communities will benefit from the methodologies utilized.”

The following representatives from the collaborating organizations will accept the award during the awards luncheon on 13 March at the 2025 AAAE/ACC Airport Planning, Design, and Construction Symposium in San Antonio, Texas:

Over the last decade, improvements to aircraft navigation technology have allowed departing and arriving aircraft to follow highly precise routes in the sky. These new routes, known as Area Navigation (RNAV) flight procedures, were implemented at BOS between 2012 and 2013 and have allowed aircraft to navigate more efficiently and predictably in the airspace around Boston. However, this shift to more precise navigation has had the side effect of concentrating aircraft trajectories over specific neighborhoods, leading to a perceived increase in aviation noise for affected communities. After the implementation of RNAV procedures, the number of noise complaints received annually by the airport increased, with complaint locations correlating strongly with RNAV tracks.

In response, in 2016, a three-way collaboration was started between the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Massport, and MIT to identify potential modifications to the then-current departure and arrival procedures at BOS that could mitigate the impacts of high flight track concentrations. In collaboration with Massport and the FAA, Professor John Hansman and graduate students at the MIT International Center for Air Transportation (ICAT) led outreach to communities and technical development of potential procedure modifications. Over a period of six years, ICAT investigated several technical solutions for mitigating aircraft noise.

Following extensive collaboration with community groups and operational stakeholders, four new low-noise flight procedures were submitted to the FAA for implementation. Now deployed operationally, these procedures are actively reducing aviation noise impacts around BOS while also providing a reduction in fuel burn.

AIAA Expands International Reach with New Section, Student Branches

February 5, 2025 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is pleased to announce it has chartered a new section in the United Kingdom (UK) and new student branches in seven countries. The AIAA Council of Directors approved the moves at its meeting during the 2025 AIAA SciTech Forum in Orlando, Florida.

The UK Section is located in AIAA Region VII and includes AIAA members living in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The addition of the UK Section brings the global total of AIAA sections to 58, in seven regions. Sections are led by AIAA members who volunteer to organize and offer technical programs, networking, educational opportunities, and other activities tailored to local aerospace professionals, students, and educators.

The seven new student branches have been granted three-year provisional charters to ensure they are sustainable before being officially chartered as a student branch. The universities include:
