AIAA Sets Out "A Framework for Aviation Cybersecurity"
Decision Paper "A Framework for Aviation Cybersecurity" to be Released 13 August at AVIATION 2013
AIAA will release its decision paper “A Framework for Aviation Cybersecurity” 13 August as part of AIAA AVIATION 2013. “A Framework for Aviation Cybersecurity” outlines the existing and evolving cyber threat to the world’s $2.2 trillion commercial aviation enterprise, and notes the lack of international agreement on cybersecurity as it relates to aviation. AIAA President-Elect Jim Albaugh said, “It is my hope that the world’s aviation community implements the framework proposed in this paper, to better safeguard and ensure the future of aviation. Only a vigilant, unified, and coordinated approach will allow us to craft the best possible defenses against the sophisticated and ever-evolving range of threats we face.”

AIAA to Designate Kitty Hawk, North Carolina as a Historic Aerospace Site
Site of First Successful Powered Heavier-Than-Air Flight in the United States
On 19 August, AIAA will designate Kitty Hawk, NC, as a historic aerospace site, following a decades-long negotiation with the U.S Park Service. A historic marker will be unveiled at a 0930 hrs ceremony as part of the First Flight Society’s National Aviation Day at Kitty Hawk. At this site on 17 December 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved the first sustained, controlled heavier-than-air flight of an aircraft, opening a new era of transportation throughout the world. Their pioneering spirit continues to inspire succeeding generations to dream, aspire, innovate, and create without limits. A full-scale replica of the Wright Flyer made by the AIAA National Capital Section is on display at the pavilion at the Wright Brothers National Monument, which is part of the park. Park information can be found at www.nps.gov/wrbr/index.htm.

Standards
New Standards Available: AIAA Space Plug-and-Play Architecture
For the first time ever, AIAA is releasing a full set of Standards (10 in total) dedicated to Plug-and-Play (PnP) capabilities. This technology, evolved from the desire to quickly and reliably assemble a spacecraft, has been a challenge since the 1960s. In this Space Plug-and-Play Architecture (SPA) set of standards, the focus is on the technical approaches to adapt the various computer PnP capabilities to small spacecraft and the space environment.
Features of the 10-Standard Set include:
- A general description of a data-centric spacecraft model to form the on-board PnP network with illustrations to clearly indicate how this works.
- A common ontology to allow for a profile-specific Common Data Dictionary (CDD) so that a stable set of terms may exist.
- Interfaces between devices to simplify the implementation of PnP at the device level.
- PnP protocols identified to date that are generally described, as are the adaptations needed for space application.
For a full list of standards available, visit AIAA's Aerospace Research Central (ARC). Please note, these Standards are available at no cost to AIAA members and may be downloaded individually or as a set.
AIAA New Committee on Standards Seeks Members
A new Committee on Standards, Space Architecture (SA CoS), is now soliciting membership for the development of proposed documents focusing on standardization in the field of architecture for space-based (micro-gravity, lunar, Martian and other planetary bodies) living and working environments for humans. Habitats have been built as unique facilities by Americans, Russians, and the one-of-a-kind international collaboration on the International Space Station. Some best practices have been identified but not documented in standards. The standardization is of interest to space-based habitat architects, developers, manufacturers, testers, transporters, integrators, operators, and users. If you are interested in participating, please contact the SA CoS Chairperson, Frederick Slane, at freds@spacestandards.org.

AIAA Congratulates Mississippi State University’s Paromita Mitra
The August 2013 Member Spotlight shines on Paromita Mitra, from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, an AIAA student member, and a senior majoring in aerospace engineering at Mississippi State University. Mitra also represented her home state as Miss Mississippi USA in the recently held Miss USA pageant. Originally from Bangladesh, Mitra maintains close family ties with relatives in that nation, and still returns there often to visit, and to work with the charitable organization, Smile Bangladesh, a non-profit group that supports reconstructive surgery for children born with cleft lips and palates.
“Since childhood my brother has been a role model in my life,” said Mitra, when asked who or what may have inspired her to into aerospace. “Growing up, he took our family on monthly planetarium visits, so space and astronomy naturally became an interest of mine.”
