The 2013–2014 AIAA Nominating Committee will meet 15 August 2013 to review nominees and select candidates to participate in the 2014 Board of Directors election to fill 10 vacancies.

AIAA congratulates Jim Albaugh, president and chief executive officer, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, and executive vice president, The Boeing Company (retired), and AIAA president-elect, on being named the recipient of the Wings Club 2013 Distinguished Achievement Award. Albaugh will receive the award at the Wing Club’s 71st Annual Awards Gala, to be held on the evening of 25 October, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, in New York City.

Elaine Camhi, the editor-in-chief of Aerospace America magazine, a publication of AIAA, has announced her retirement from the magazine, effective 19 July.

“For over 22 years Elaine Camhi has served the aerospace community tirelessly as the Editor-In-Chief of Aerospace America Magazine,” said AIAA President Mike Griffin.

A team from Kapi‘olani Community College, Honolulu, Hawaii, has won the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)/American Astronautical Society (AAS) CanSat Competition, held June 7–9 in Abilene, Texas. A “CanSat” is a rocket payload roughly the size of a soda can, used to teach miniaturized satellite technology.

A team representing Amirkabir University, Tehran, Iran, placed second in the competition, and a team representing Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada, placed third.

The Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS), recently announced the publication of its newest Recommended International Standard, the Conjunction Data Message (CDM). With this milestone, providers of satellite positional data will be able to use a common format to notify satellite operators that their satellite is approaching another satellite.

Standards in the industry provide many benefits, including economies of scale, expanded trade possibilities, and increased resource flow. From new project proposal to publication, AIAA, which is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), adheres to procedures that facilitate adoption of its standards by agencies and industry as well as serve as the basis for international standards.

On 19 August, AIAA will designate Kitty Hawk, NC, as a historic aerospace site, following a decades-long negotiation with the U.S Park Service. A historic marker will be unveiled at a 0930 hrs ceremony as part of the First Flight Society’s National Aviation Day at Kitty Hawk. At this site on 17 December 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved the first sustained, controlled heavier-than-air flight of an aircraft, opening a new era of transportation throughout the world. Their pioneering spirit continues to inspire succeeding generations to dream, aspire, innovate, and create without limits. A full-scale replica of the Wright Flyer made by the AIAA National Capital Section is on display at the pavilion at the Wright Brothers National Monument, which is part of the park. A new Committee on Standards, Space Architecture (SA CoS), is now soliciting membership for the development of proposed documents focusing on standardization in the field of architecture for space-based (micro-gravity, lunar, Martian and other planetary bodies) living and working environments for humans. Habitats have been built as unique facilities by Americans, Russians, and the one-of-a-kind international collaboration on the International Space Station. Some best practices have been identified but not documented in standards. The standardization is of interest to space-based habitat architects, developers, manufacturers, testers, transporters, integrators, operators, and users. These two exciting conferences will co-locate 15–17 July 2013 in San Jose, California to provide one major exposition for the aerospace propulsion and energy conversion communities. The conference will provide a forum for the exchange of information on a larger scale than possible at separate events. The combined event will feature both programmatic and technical information as well as a beneficial networking environment.

AIAA has introduced an innovative approach to K–12 education, the AIAA Educator Academy, which features three curriculum modules: Mars Rover; Electric Cargo Airplane; and Space Weather Balloon, targeted at different grade levels. The program is designed to be a collaborative effort between AIAA local sections and their communities to excite and inspire students to apply math and science concepts they learn in the classroom to solve real-world aerospace challenges. Debuting at the SPACE 2013 Conference is a Mars Rover Celebration demonstration event for local San Diego elementary and middle school students. Stop by and see where these students’ explorations of Mars will take them. Students will also be visiting the Exhibition Hall at the conclusion of this event.

AIAA and the AIAA Foundation are pleased to announce the recipients of the AIAA Foundation’s five Graduate Awards for the 2013–2014 academic year. Each year the AIAA Foundation presents Orville and Wilbur Wright Graduate Awards. These $5,000 awards, given in memory of the Wright brothers’ contributions to the evolution of flight, are presented to students pursuing master’s degrees or doctoral thesis work.

The AIAA Member Spotlight for July 2013 falls on Timothy “Tim” Dominick, an AIAA Associate Fellow, and Senior Thermal Analyst, ATK Missile Defense & Controls Division. Tim is also AIAA Region One’s Deputy Director of Public Policy. He joined AIAA in 1996.

Whereas many have found the inspiration to enter the aerospace profession in the classic lines of a P-51D “Mustang,” or the steely nerved flying of the early test pilots, or in Armstrong’s historic “leap,” Tim found one part of his inspiration “a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.” As Tim put it, “My inspiration to join the aerospace field came from George Lucas. As anyone who grew up at the same time can attest, his movies captured my imagination, and I’ve always had the dream of building my own X-Wing fighter.” The second part of Tim’s inspiration came from his grandfather. “My grandfather was also an important influence on my interest in aviation. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and would tell me stories about his experiences. I remember him always wanting to learn more about the history of aviation, and everything that he learned he shared with me. From there, I continued to develop a passion for all things related to flight.”

When it came to his favorite aerospace related memory, Tim, like so many others in this column before him, had more than one. His first “had to be the day we fired the first development motor for the Orion Launch Abort System Attitude Control Motor. I served as the lead analyst for that program, and we had been on an accelerated development schedule, including implementing numerous new technologies. Saying there were a significant number of challenges to us being successful is an understatement. When the DM-1 motor fired and was 100% successful, I experienced a flood of emotions including excitement, relief, and exhaustion. It is a day that I will never forget.”
