Propulsion and Energy Forum 2014 Set for 28–30 July in Cleveland, OH
Leveraging Technology Synergies to Realize the Promise of Interdependent Systems

From keynotes and panel discussions, to networking and technical sessions, the Propulsion and Energy Forum, set for 28–30 July in Cleveland, OH, provides attendees multiple opportunities to discuss propulsion and energy at every level, in one place, for three days.

The forum will provide new insights into critical challenges and opportunities facing our community, including:

  • Advanced technology architecture — the art of the possible;
  • Systems management and development — the view from the users;
  • The impact of technology on manufacturing, platforms, and future systems; and
  • Research and technology, the new development paradigm.

Each day features an overall topic that the content and discussions will follow. The mornings will focus on "The Art of the Impossible," and the afternoons will explore "The View from the Users."

Liaisons to the Board of Directors

The AIAA Board of Directors, Student and Young Professional Liaisons were instituted in January 2004, at the request of the AIAA Board of Directors through the AIAA Strategic Plan. The AIAA Strategic Plan tasked AIAA to establish a liaison position on the Board of Directors for Student Members and Young Professionals. These positions are to be non-voting Board of Directors positions, lasting two years in duration. Liaisons will be paid to travel to attend Board of Directors meetings in January (SciTech forum), May (Washington, DC, Board Meetings), and August (meeting TBD) each year. For eligibility criteria and how to apply, visit AIAA's Young Professional Liaison page, or AIAA's Student Liaison page.

AIAA Salutes 45th Anniversary of Apollo 11

AIAA celebrates the aerospace ingenuity, collaboration, and will to achieve that carried the crew of Apollo 11 to their historic landing on the moon 45 years ago this month. Eagle I’s descent to the lunar surface on July 20, 1969, and Neil Armstrong’s subsequent first steps outside the capsule on July 21, were iconic moments in the history of mankind. The courage and dedication that Neil Armstrong, AIAA Honorary Fellow; Buzz Aldrin, AIAA Fellow; and Michael Collins demonstrated on that extraordinary mission stand forever as a testament to what is possible when driven, innovative aerospace professionals rally together to fulfill the ambition of a nation while altering the course of human existence. AIAA salutes the crew and the mission team, as well as the thousands of unsung heroes who made Apollo 11 a success.

Standards
New Standard Available: AIAA Qualification and Quality Requirements for Space Solar Cells (S-111A-2014)

This standard is a revision of a document developed by the AIAA Solar Cells and Solar Panels Committee on Standards. It focuses on space solar panel qualification; much effort and care has been taken to clarify requirements and resolve other issues that were present in the original version. It establishes the quality requirements and provides the methods for establishing the qualification of electrical components integrated onto spacecraft solar panels. The result is a new standard that defines the best practices for space solar panel qualification. Standards are free to AIAA members; download a copy today!

July-August Aerospace America Digital Magazine Now Online

The July–August 2014 issue of Aerospace America is now available online for AIAA members. Don’t miss this month's cover story, “Learning fast from MH370,” by Natalia Mironova and Philip Butterworth-Hayes, in which they discuss how the international aviation community wants to put an airliner-tracking system in place to prevent more mysteries like that of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 – and to do it quickly.  As the authors write, “The world is about to learn whether the mystery of Flight 370 will be enough to prompt the airlines and the world’s air navigation service providers — meaning the FAA and equivalent organizations around the globe — to finally resolve the technical, financial and policy challenges posed by global airliner tracking.”

To access the July–August issue of Aerospace America visit www.aiaa.org/myaiaa, log in, and navigate to “Access Publications & Materials” and select “Aerospace America.”
