AIAA honored and celebrated the recipients of its most prestigious aerospace awards at the 2013 Aerospace Spotlight Awards Gala on 8 May 2013 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC. This annual black-tie event recognizes the most influential and inspiring individuals in aerospace, whose outstanding contributions merit the highest accolades.

The 2013–2014 AIAA Nominating Committee will meet 15 August 2013 to review nominees and select candidates to participate in the 2014 Board of Directors election to fill the following vacancies: Vice President-Elect, Finance; Vice President-Elect, International Activities; Vice President-Elect, Publications; Vice President-Elect, Standards; Director – Technical, Aircraft and Atmospheric Systems Group; Director – Technical, Engineering and Technology Management Group; Director – Technical, Space and Missile Systems Group; Director – At-Large; Director – At-Large, International; and Director – Region 1.

Once the nomination system officially opens, AIAA voting members in good standing may nominate any AIAA member in good standing for any of those positions by submitting a nomination through the AIAA website. (Log in to www.aiaa.org/myaiaa, locate “Nominations & Voting” under the category “Other Participation” and select “BoD Nomination.”) Nominations are expected to open 14 June and will remain open through 9 August 2013. Leaders of 64 scientific, engineering, and technology associations recently sent a letter to House and Senate leaders, calling for a reform of the government personnel travel rules recently imposed by OMB Memorandum M-12-12. Issued in the wake of the scandal that arose from a General Services Administration event held in Las Vegas, the OMB memorandum strictly limits the ability of government employees to attend professional conferences.

AIAA congratulates the U.S. Navy and AIAA corporate member Northrop Grumman Corp. on the successful launch of their X-47B unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), from the deck of the George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier on 14 May. The launch made aviation history, marking the first catapult launch of a jet propelled UAV from an aircraft carrier flight deck.

The AIAA Foundation has received a 2013 “Best of Reston Award” in the Scientific Member Association category by the Reston Award Program.

Founded in 1996, the AIAA Foundation is a nonprofit, tax-exempt educational organization committed to providing financial support to educational programs. By devoting resources to the education of both practicing and future aerospace professionals, and by recognizing professional achievement, the Foundation influences the future development of the aerospace profession and its workforce.

AIAA and the Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on May 7 in Alexandria, Va., as part of AIAA’s spring business meetings. The ceremony was followed by a collaboration meeting and an afternoon tea reception celebrating the event.

AIAA endorses California State Assembly Bill 927, the “Aerospace Tax Credit Act.” The bill, sponsored by Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi (Dem. – 66th Dist.) would give tax credits to firms that show a net increase in their aerospace sector workforce.

AIAA endorses California Senate Bill 19, “The Space Flight Sales Tax Exemption Act.” The bill, sponsored by Sen. Steve Knight (Rep. – 21st Dist.), would give sales and use tax exemptions to equipment and materials used to construct facilities designed to launch and operate space vehicles.

The AIAA Board of Directors approved a collaborative Memorandum of Understanding with the Associação Brasileira Engenharia e Ciências Mecânicas (ABCM) on Thursday, 9 May 2013. The purpose of the MOU is to formalize an agreement between the two societies that will serve their memberships and common interests in the engineering community, as well as offer support to each other's technical, student, conference, and professional development activities. The MOU will be signed within the year.

Since 2011, AIAA has been working with ACCUCOMS as exclusive sales representatives in Turkey, but now this agreement has been significantly expanded to include Europe, India, and MENA. AIAA congratulates Dr. David Livingston, Bel Tiburon, CA, for the 2,000th episode of his Internet program “The Space Show,” which aired 7 May 2013.

On 1 June, AIAA designated Pitcairn Field #2, in Willow Grove, PA, as a historic aerospace site. A historic marker was unveiled during a ceremony at the Tinius Olsen Testing Machine Company facility that now occupies the site. On 18 December 1928, Arthur Rawson, a factory pilot for the Cierva Autogiro Company, and then Harold F. Pitcairn, flew a Cierva C.8W Autogiro from Building #3 at Pitcairn Field #2. The flights marked the first time a rotary-wing aircraft was successfully flown in the U.S.

A new Committee on Standards, Space Architecture (SA CoS), is now soliciting membership for the development of proposed documents focusing on standardization in the field of architecture for space-based (micro-gravity, lunar, Martian and other planetary bodies) living and working environments for humans. Habitats have been built as unique facilities by Americans, Russians, and the one-of-a-kind international collaboration on the International Space Station. Some best practices have been identified but not documented in standards. The standardization is of interest to space-based habitat architects, developers, manufacturers, testers, transporters, integrators, operators, and users. In May, AIAA brought the seven AIAA Foundation Educator Achievement Award winners to Washington, DC, to meet with leaders in the aerospace industry and receive their awards at the Aerospace Spotlight Gala. Lanena Berry, Betty Dabrowski, Lisa Damian-Marvin, Sean McCullough, Deborah Swan, and Jim Weber were treated to a tour of the Ronald Reagan National Airport Tower, guided tours of the National Air & Space Museum and the National Air & Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, and the Lockheed Martin Global Vision Center.

The nomination deadline for the Sustained Service Award is 1 July. This award is designed to recognize significant service and contributions to AIAA. The nominee must be a member in good standing who has shown continuing dedication to the interests of the Institute over a period of years. A maximum of 20 awards are presented each year. Nominations may be submitted online.

The AIAA Foundation has announced the winners of its Region I Student Paper Competition, held 5–6 April on the campus of the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park, MD.

The AIAA Member Spotlight for the month of June, 2013, shines on Dr. Brian Pomeroy, Combustion Analyst, at Aerojet. Brian has been an AIAA member since 2002. At Aerojet, Brian is responsible for assisting in liquid rocket engine combustion tests and performance analysis.

Like so many of the Member Spotlight subjects before him, Brian’s interest in aerospace began as a child, growing up on the east coast of the United States. Brian first remembered a trip he took as a boy; as being one of the main influences on his desire to enter the aerospace community: “I made a trip to the National Air and Space Museum where I was captivated by the technology and the ability to fly airplanes and launch rockets into space. The concept seemed very foreign and exciting as it was not something that was an everyday task.” “As I grew older, I continued to expand my knowledge in the aerospace and space exploration fields to learn what it had to offer to individuals as well as society at large. I came to see the field of aerospace as something I was genuinely interested in pursuing.”
