Dear Colleague,

As we start 2013, there is little doubt that the full impact of 2012 events has yet to play out. In 2012 we witnessed a “perfect storm” of the fallout from a scandal within a federal agency – the General Services Administration (GSA) – and the failure of Congress and the White House to achieve meaningful budgetary progress. This combination has left our Institute facing an atmosphere of tightening government travel rules and shrinking agency budgets – both of which threaten the long-term viability of AIAA.

Dr. Klaus Dannenberg, deputy executive director and Fellow of AIAA, has been elected to the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) as a Corresponding Member. Dr. Dannenberg will be inducted during the Academy’s annual dinner 18 March, in Paris, France.

“I've known Klaus Dannenberg for 35 years, going back to when he was chair of the AIAA Guidance and Control Technical Committee, and I was a then-young member. We have no finer member of our Institute and, now, neither does the IAA,” stated AIAA President Mike Griffin.

AIAA will debut a new event, AIAA AVIATION 2013, 12–14 August at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, Los Angeles, CA. AIAA will host a March symposium on the nonmilitary uses of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The AIAA Policy Symposium: Civilian Applications of UAVs – A California Perspective will take place 26–28 March 2013, at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza, Thousand Oaks, CA. The event is co-hosted by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom; California State Assemblymembers Jeff Gorell (44th District), Katcho Achadjian (35th District), Steven Bradford (62nd District), Connie Conway (26th District), Christina Garcia (58th District), Curt Hagman (55th District), and Al Muratsuchi (66th District); and California State Senators Joel Anderson (36th District), Anthony Cannella (12th District), and Steve Knight (21st District).

AIAA has changed the name of its “Journal of Aerospace Computing, Information, and Communication ” (JACIC) to the “Journal of Aerospace Information Systems” (JAIS). The new title and publication scope allows JAIS to focus on a wider variety of research within the aerospace information systems community than was possible under the old scope of the JACIC.

In January, AIAA completed its first ever Rising Leaders in Aerospace Forum, held in conjunction with the 51st Aerospace Sciences Meetingg in Grapevine, Texas, at the Gaylord Texan Hotel, 7–10 January. The Rising Leaders in Aerospace forum offered the next generation of young aerospace leaders, age 35 and under, access to top aerospace leaders and their perspectives, and multiple opportunities for networking with those leaders and their peers.

Every two years, the AIAA Foundation recognizes up to seven outstanding educators for their accomplishments in exciting K–12 students about math and science and preparing them to use and contribute to tomorrow's technologies. Each recipient of the Educator Achievement Award will receive an expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC for the Aerospace Spotlight Awards Gala in May 2013. AIAA is seeking an outstanding candidate with an international reputation to assume the responsibilities of Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics. The 2013 AIAA Congressional Visits Day program is set for 19–20 March in Washington, DC. This event will be held in October 2013 in Beijing. The Grand Prix features unmanned aerial vehicle design competitions and will award prizes for creativity and athletics. Now is the time to start thinking about who in your Region/Section is eligible for Associate Fellow, Fellow, and Honorary Fellow. Associate Fellow candidates shall be persons who have accomplished or been in charge of important engineering or scientific work, or who have done work of outstanding merit or have otherwise made outstanding contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics. Nominees must be AIAA Senior Members and have at least 12 years of professional experience. Associate Fellow nominations are due 15 April 2013 and references are due 15 May 2013.

The AIAA Member Spotlight for the month of March 2013 shines on Dr. Allen E. Fuhs, AIAA Honorary Fellow, and Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), Monterey, CA. Fuhs has been an AIAA member since 1956.

Fuhs has had multiple leadership positions within the Institute, including serving as President of AIAA from 1986 to 1987, Vice President of Publications from 1979 to 1981, and editor of the Progress Series from 1998 to 2001. In recognition of his dedication to the Institute and for his many contributions to the field of astronautics, Fuhs was made an AIAA Honorary Fellow in 2013.
