To better serve our members and to enhance the value of our new forum lineup, AIAA recently debuted its new forum website for the AIAA Aviation and Aeronautics Forum (AVIATION), occurring 16–20 June 2014 in Atlanta, GA. Gone are the days when AIAA event websites revolved around the opening date of registration, or the deadlines for calls for papers. The days of building community and excitement before, during, and after the forum have arrived.

On Friday evening, 14 March, the National Air and Space Society’s Lecture Series sponsored “Space Shuttle Missions and Memories.” Taking place at Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA, the event presented a rare opportunity to learn about the evolution of the space shuttle program from three former first-hand participants. Touching upon the early days of the shuttle program was Capt. Robert L. Crippen, USN (Ret.), astronaut on STS-1, STS-7, STS-41C, and STS-41G, and an AIAA Honorary Fellow and former AIAA President. Representing the mid-shuttle era was N. Wayne Hale, Jr., an AIAA Senior Member, and an engineer who served in the Mission Control Center as flight director for 40 shuttle missions, eventually becoming the Space Shuttle Program manager. Speaking on the final phase of the shuttle program was AIAA Associate Fellow and Executive Director Dr. Sandra Magnus. Dr. Magnus was an astronaut on STS-112, STS-119, STS-126, ISS Expedition 18, and STS-135. While attendance at the lecture was reserved for members of the Museum’s National Air and Space Society and their guests, anyone can watch the lecture via recorded webcast.

AIAA: How did you find yourself applying to be on King of the Nerds (KOTN)?

Mary Kate (MK): It’s a really funny story actually. I was familiar with the show but never thought about applying. KOTN reached out to my advisor and said they were looking for people who had a passion for space. My advisor thought it was something I should do, so I applied. Three days later I got a call from California and it has been a roller coaster from there.

The 17th annual Congressional Visits Day program took place on 12 March, drawing 119 AIAA members from 34 sections, representing 21 states and the District of Columbia, to Washington, DC, to meet with their Congressional decision makers to discuss matters of vital importance to America’s aerospace community.

“Congressional Visits Day 2014 was a huge success,” said AIAA Executive Director Sandra Magnus. “Over 100 members descended on Washington, DC, scheduling 191 meetings with their representatives to discuss the importance of Aerospace for the country. CVD is just the first step in establishing relationships with policy makers. I look forward to hearing from everyone about the follow-on activities that will be undertaken locally!”

On 27 February, AIAA Executive Director Sandra H. Magnus testified before the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology on “Mars Flyby 2021: The First Deep Space Mission for the Orion and Space Launch System.” Magnus described the current lack of long-range, cohesive vision within the U.S. space program and the lack of budget support for long-term exploration goals, and challenged Congress to create a unified, forward-looking, goal-oriented exploration strategy.

Frank Kendall, Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics (AT&L), issued a 20 February memo discussing the DoD participation in technical and industry conferences. In his memo, addressed to the Research and Development and Science and Technology departments of the DoD, he highlights that science and technology conferences and symposia are crucial for maintaining the technical competence and professional development of DoD scientists and engineers.

For two hours Friday evening, NASA and the National Geographic Channel provided viewers with a live look behind the scenes, both aboard the International Space Station and with the ground team at Mission Control that watches over the crew and station systems. As the ISS soared 260 miles above the Earth, Astronauts Rick Mastracchio of NASA and Koichi Wakata, the first Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency station commander, provided viewers with a guided tour of the space station. Former astronaut and AIAA Executive Director Sandy Magnus said, “It’s important that NASA do things like this because [NASA] is funded by the taxpayer and part of that mission is to let taxpayers know what we’re doing with their money. ... Space stations are a little bit more remote [than shuttle launches] and it’s harder for people to relate to it because it is just up there going around and around and around.”

The 2014 AIAA regional student conferences kicked off in March with the Region VI Student Paper Conference. This conference was hosted by the California State University – Sacramento, March 1-2. There were twenty-three presentations and eighty-eight attendees at the conference.

The Standards Executive Council, which represents a diverse group in the aeronautics and astronautics field and oversees the development of standards at AIAA, is seeking to increase its membership. The Member Spotlight’s beam shone to the southwest this month, when it fell on Houston, Texas, and landed on 2014 AIAA Goddard Astronautics Award winner Glynn Lunney, a “true hero of the space age, and one of the outstanding contributors to the exploration of space over the last four decades,” according to former NASA Johnson Space Center Director Christopher C. Kraft .

Lunney began his career at NASA with the agency’s inception in 1958, and served NASA through its most historic hours. As a flight director in the Gemini and Apollo programs, Lunney was there during Apollo 11’s landing on the lunar surface, and was later part of the team that brought the Apollo 13 astronauts safely back to Earth, after an explosion critically damaged their capsule in the early stages of their 1970 lunar mission. Lunney, as well as the rest of the Apollo 13 team, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Richard Nixon for their efforts. After the Apollo program ended, Lunney became the technical director of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, a joint spaceflight collaboration between the United States and the then Soviet Union.
