AIAA AVIATION 2013 a Huge Success
Charles A. Bolden, Jim Albaugh, Richard A. Clarke, Richard Aboulafia, and Other High-Level Industry Leaders Highlight 2013 Event – Don’t Miss Out on 2014!

Top leaders from government, industry, and academia gathered at the AIAA AVIATION 2013 Conference 12–14 August in Los Angeles, California for a very successful and well received event. The Institute thanks all those who participated. For those not able to attend, a number of the keynote addresses and panel discussions were video recorded and are available for viewing.

The conference kicked off Monday afternoon, 12 August, with an opening keynote address by AIAA President-Elect Jim Albaugh, executive vice president, The Boeing Company, president and chief executive officer, Boeing Commercial Airplanes (retired). Albaugh set the tone for AIAA AVIATION 2013 stating, “Aerospace is a fantastic industry – and it really is a force for good in this world. We drive the world’s economy. We’re great stewards of the environment. And I think we’ve been able to bring together and connect cultures and countries and people that have never been connected before.”

Cybersecurity expert Richard A. Clarke delivered a keynote address on the afternoon of Tuesday, 13 August as part of AIAA’s AVIATION 2013 Conference, which took place 12–14 August in Los Angeles, CA.

Clarke, chairman and CEO, Good Harbor Security Risk Management LLC, and former U.S. national coordinator for security, infrastructure protection, and counterterrorism, delivered a stern warning, pointing out to the audience of 500+ aviation professionals that “aviation is the sine qua non of U.S. society, if not the world,” and reminding them that the bulk of the world’s commerce is fueled by the aviation sector.

AIAA Sets Out a Framework for Aviation Cybersecurity

AIAA officially released its decision paper “A Framework for Aviation Cybersecurity” on 13 August as part of the AIAA AVIATION 2013 conference. “A Framework for Aviation Cybersecurity” outlines the existing and evolving cyber threat to the world’s $2.2 trillion commercial aviation enterprise, and notes the lack of international agreement on cybersecurity for aviation. “It is my hope that the world’s aviation community implements the framework proposed in this paper, to better safeguard and ensure the future of aviation,” said AIAA President-Elect Jim Albaugh. “Only a vigilant, unified, and coordinated approach will allow us to craft the best possible defenses against the sophisticated and ever-evolving range of threats we face.”

Above and Beyond: A Virtual Tour of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum

National Science Week was celebrated in Australia 10–18 August 2013. The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) arranged for AIAA members and National Air and Space Museum curators Dr. Tom Crouch and Dr. Valerie Neal to tour states in Australia to lecture on the history and future of the aviation and space professions. The tour culminated on 20 August with a three-way video connection between RMIT and both locations of the National Air and Space Museum. Guests were greeted by the Lord Mayor of the City of Melbourne, and Councillor Ken Ong. This first ever three-way connection allowed the curators to bring the artifacts to life to their audience of students, teachers and the general public, providing exclusive insights into their storied histories. Students from MacRobertson Girls High School and St. Martin de Porres School, Laverton were specially invited guests.

Standards
New Standard Available: AIAA Qualification and Quality Requirements for Electrical Components on Space Solar Panels (AIAA S-112A-2013e)

This standard is a revision of a document developed by the AIAA Solar Cells and Solar Panels Committee on Standards. It focuses on space solar panel qualification; much effort and care has been taken to clarify requirements and resolve other issues and errors that were present in the original version. It establishes the quality requirements and provides the methods for establishing the qualification of electrical components integrated onto spacecraft solar panels. The result is a new standard that defines the best practices for space solar panel qualification.

New Standards Available: AIAA Space Plug-and-Play Architecture

For the first time ever, AIAA is releasing a full set of standards (10 in total) dedicated to Plug-and-Play (PnP) capabilities. This technology, evolved from the desire to quickly and reliably assemble a spacecraft, has been a challenge since the 1960s. In this Space Plug-and-Play Architecture (SPA) set of standards, the focus is on the technical approaches to adapt the various computer PnP capabilities to small spacecraft and the space environment.

Features of the 10-standard set include:

  • A general description of a data-centric spacecraft model to form the on-board PnP network with illustrations to clearly indicate how this works.
  • A common ontology to allow for a profile-specific Common Data Dictionary (CDD) so that a stable set of terms may exist.
  • Interfaces between devices to simplify the implementation of PnP at the device level.
  • PnP protocols identified to date that are generally described, as are the adaptations needed for space application.

For a full list of standards available, visit AIAA’s Aerospace Research Central (ARC). Please note, these standards are available at no cost to AIAA members and may be downloaded individually or as a set.

September Aerospace America Digital Magazine Now Online

The September 2013 issue of Aerospace America is now available online for AIAA members. Don’t miss this month's feature article, “Health Effects of Human Spaceflight,” by James W. Canan, which discusses the increasing concerns about the effects on human health as sojourns in space grow longer. As Canan writes: “The ISS serves as a flying laboratory where the responses of real people in a radiation-prone microgravity environment can be studied in real time. Observable changes, psychological as well as physical, are more prevalent and varied than scientists once believed, and some have come as a surprise to researchers.”
