February 13, 2020 – Reston, Va. – The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) congratulates AIAA Fellow Darryll J. Pines on becoming the next president of the University of Maryland.
Pines has been the dean of the university’s Clark School of Engineering at College Park since January 2009 and is expected to take office on July 1.
An active AIAA member since 1988, Pines currently serves on such AIAA committees as Content Advisory and Publications as well as the Adaptive Structures Technical Committee. His research has focused on structural dynamics, including structural health monitoring and prognosis, smart sensors, and adaptive, morphing, and biologically-inspired structures, as well as the guidance, navigation, and control of uninhabited aerospace vehicles.
“It is with great pride that we congratulate AIAA Fellow and lifetime member Darryll Pines on his appointment to lead Maryland’s flagship university,” said Dan Dumbacher, AIAA executive director. “At AIAA, we know engineers build the world and look forward to working with Darryll as he expands his vision. Under Darryll’s leadership, U-Md.’s Clark School of Engineering has contributed to creating high-caliber engineering graduates whose work is helping to make our world safer and more sustainable.”
Pines said in a statement: “It is an honor to take on the leadership role at the University of Maryland, College Park — clearly one of our nation’s finest Research I universities — and one that I know and love so well. ‘Research I’ generally refers to doctoral schools with the highest levels of research.
“As professor and dean of engineering, I am well acquainted with and have long admired the outstanding faculty, the executive leadership, and the passionate and civically engaged alumni and students who make Maryland such a special place. I’m excited by this new challenge and can’t wait to listen, learn, and lead this incredible university.”
