Hanspeter Schaub Appointed Editor-in-Chief of AIAA's Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets

January 20, 2017 – Reston, Va. – Jim Maser, president of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), has appointed Dr. Hanspeter Schaub, an AIAA Associate Fellow and the Alfred T. and Betty E. Look Professor of Engineering in the Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder, as editor-in-chief of AIAA’s “Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets (JSR).” Schaub succeeds Dr. Robert Braun of the Georgia Institute of Technology.

“Dr. Hanspeter Schaub is an outstanding scholar in aerospace science and engineering,” said Frank Lu, AIAA vice president, publications. “Having him as the editor-in-chief of JSR will ensure the tradition of quality and relevance of this journal to the aerospace community.”

Schaub is developing an active research program at the University of Colorado Boulder in the areas of spacecraft proximity flying, charged astrodynamics including touchless actuation of space debris, redundant attitude control using momentum exchange devices, autonomous attitude control and mission support, as well as astrodynamics software research tool developments. In addition to those activities, Schaub directs the university’s Autonomous Vehicle Systems Laboratory, where the staff researches attitude control, as well as relative motion sensing, dynamics and control of aerospace systems.

Schaub is a well-known author and editor, previously serving as associate editor of AIAA’s “Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics.”

Schaub’s many honors include a 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award from Texas A&M University, the 2013 AIAA Summerfield Book Award, a 2012 University of Colorado Boulder Dean’s Award for Outstanding Teaching, and the 2010 Provost’s Faculty Achievement Award from the University of Colorado Boulder. Schaub is a Fellow of the American Astronautical Society.
